Heated hand grips

I have fitted the touratech hand guard extensions and lifted the guards with the levers just covered by the bottom edge,
there is a difference at speed, my grips are as hot as the gsa tc ones,
The standard hand guards are too small to keep the wind off,, roamer

Put Wunderlich hand guard extensions on my 2013 LC hoping that would make a difference. Nope sorry. Heated grips not worth a f**ck. Bought one of the gizmo above to test for myself.

Nutty were your grips any good on your GS?

I actually think the stock guards, small as they are, work well. Much better than the previous models.

They were crap on my first 2013 LC, but better on the 2014 replacement bike (nowhere as hot as the ones on my current bike though)

I've had a 2008 GS, a 2010 GSA, and now a 2014 GSA, the heated grips were pretty much the same on all of them. With my summer gloves I can feel plenty of heat on the high setting and need to change to the lower setting but, of course, at this time of year the backs of my hands will get very cold. For Winter I use slightly thicker gloves, they are not proper Winter gloves but Alpine Stars all weather, Goretex gloves (I forget the model name). With these thicker gloves I can just and so feel the heat through them.

Results are in! Temperature outside is 3 degrees Celsius. My IR temp monitor had the same temp readout for stuff outside too so was in keeping with the bikes temp display.

All the testing was done with a hot engine on a bike that had been on a 20 minute run so the grips shouldn't be operating in the 50% reduced power mode I have referred to in other threads (where it is suggested the bike runs the grips at 50% power mode while the engine is not under temp and / or not being operated at certain revs).

After 1 minute the grips were at 10 degrees Celsius!! (50 F)
After 2 minutes they were 15 degrees Celsius (59 F)
After 10 minutes they reached a maximum of 40.5 degrees Celsius (105 F) and would not go higher.

My old TC would be burning me after 10 minutes. Mine are quite clearly not doing what they are meant to do! The power mode for the grips was full power too!

I will test 2 or 3 TC bikes tomorrow from COLD to see what results I get and within the same timings and update! Then to show this thread and the many others on here with a view to getting them sorted once and for all!

Titto! throw them this in their face! nice job. and ask them to reimburse cost of IR temperature monitor + 30 mins of your time 😁

When you start to introduce 'load' ...
ie; cold hands & gloves that rob the heat from the heated grips they don't produce sufficient power to maintain temperature..

Good winter gloves are thinner on the palm to take advantage of the heated grips, and thicker on the backs.

More results. From a 2010 TC Rt.
This was started from cold, then put the grips onto full power. Outside temperature was -1.5.

After 2 minutes, temps were 15 degrees.
5 mins temps were 41.
After 10 mins they hit 60.5 degrees Celsius!!! I went inside then as i I was freezing!!

So, two things of note. The grips heat up far hotter but also far more quickly than on my current bike.

Second RT tested this is a 2010 TC at 4 degrees outside temp.

After ten minutes the grips reached 51degrees.
Same equipment used etc.

Just an update, I'm booked in for next week for replacement grips! Dealer was brilliant.
It appears I'm not alone too!!
I will update on the results.

The grips on my 2014 GS LC work fine but I wish there were three or four heat level options like most other grips.
I have been riding a lot in temperatures just above freezing and when wearing winter gloves, have found the lower setting not warm enough and the high setting much too hot!
On the high setting, I cannot hold the grips with a bare hand, so there are no issues with insufficient heat here! I just wish there was a middle setting!

I asked about a fix for my grips at Allan Jefferies today and their opening comments were "BMW say they're not as hot as the old ones, but bring it in, we'll check it over and you can compare it to our demo bikes" etc. I'm not holding my breath that they'll do anything... :(

I do not understand this. Is your bike a Camhead? If so, what does it have to do with this thread?

I was comparing the older models with the wc Jim. Haven't you had your morning coffee yet?!!

Whilst my GSA WC grips are not as hot as my old TC, with Givi handguard extensions and summer type gloves I feel very comfortable on the low setting- even towards freezing temps. Without the Givis there is a definite reduction in heat.

Seems pointless since there is no doubt the old bikes have hotter grips.

I don't drink coffee, and it was night time when I posted, had some rum though! :jager
