Heated hand grips

Quite easy to make a measurement.

take 1 litre of water (weigh to be accurate)

repeat

Take one new heated grip and one old heated grip

Place in water and turn on

Place a thermometer in each to read temp.

At half hour intervals take reading of temperature.

Rise in temp should be noticeable in each case and if there is a difference then there will be a difference in temperature

I do have an instrument that measures VERY accurately a rise in temperature and hence measures Calorific Value of substances.

If the grips are that crap then reduce the amount of water

I'll let you do that experiment :) but you make a sensible point, if you are going to measure the temperature then measure the rise above ambient in very still air then compare that with either the earlier or later bikes.

Ha ha, I don't consider myself to be doing that. But I do find that you jump to BMW's defence at every chance and seem quite happy to put up with defective / not up to standard equipment or mechanics. I do think you say a lot on here just to wind folk up! I'm not sure why you would be happy with meager heated grips to be honest?!

The clutch/gearbox thing is subjective, the heated grips are subjective so we can argue about those forever. I don't put up the things that are broken though, e.g. the screen that cracked twice, the switch gear also replaced twice, both under warranty and it now looks as though the pannier mechanism has jammed again - so I will be chasing BMW up with that one too.

Or even simpler. Take one pre 15 GS and a 15 GS side by side. Start them up and then at the same time place a hand on the grips and compare.

It's not rocket science !

Did this on Saturday …the winner was ………the 2015 bike EASILY ….

It is that direct lol

Yes 2 equations are relevant: Power (Watts) = Potential difference (Volts) x Current (Amps)

and Potential difference (V) = Current (A) x Resistance (Ohms)

You can combine these 2 equations to give Power = Current^2 x Resistance

If you half the resistance then the current will double nd the heat produced will increase. Hope that helps.

Update: I have spoken to my dealership today explaining my dissatisfaction at the grips despite BMW's latest "fix". They are fully aware of lots of other people experiencing the same issues. (This is no reflection on the dealer, who have been brilliant to me, I cannot fault them at all - Top marks for customer service!)

The previous bikes cannot be retrofitted, as its not just the grips that need replacing, its the ECU which has been changed for the '15 model bikes.

I have just been on the phone to BMW customer services, who will look into it now and deal with the complaint for me. There's nothing more the dealers can do for us now so over to BMW.
Thanks to those who have taken part in the poll -

Edit;

Here is a link to the poll.

Thanks Titto. Not much point in doing anymore research if a whole new ECU is required.

Guess we wait and see what BMW say but doesn't sound promising.

I have also been in contact with BMW customer bullshit, they have informed me that they do not have a problem !!!

I have sent a reply stating that under the sales of goods act 1979 goods have to be fit for purpose which these grips are far from and I have ask for a full refund or replacement.

I wonder what bullshit I am going to get next !!!!

So does this "new" ECU have a different part number I wonder and why could they just not "flash" a new complete program into the existing ECU .

Not against anyone on here, but need a new ECU to do control a current to slightly different heating element. What a load of bolox.

Perhaps the output for the grips has been uprated? Then again could be bull lol

You get my vote, but maybe they mean a control unit that is just used by the grips, there's probably more than one "ecu" as on modern cars. So not actually the ECU that does the engine management, maybe there's a convenience one tucked away that does other stuff.

Will rip into mine this weekend and have a nosy

Just got this message from a member of ADVrider...

Just got a call from my dealer..2015 grips FIT AND WORK ON MY 2014 GSA... THEY ARE GOING TO REPLACE THEM! FREE
