Heated hand grips

Had another email of BMW customer bullshit today after rejecting their offer of a £250 contribution stating that they are investigating the matter further !!! Wonder how much longer it is going to take them, they have had over a year now, I think they are staring to run out of bullshit to give us now.

Has any one out there got a 15 bike with the new grips who is willing to let me try them on my bike !!!!! Please
Clever bmw management are counting on the turn of summer to save their skin.

Price of a pair of grips is just under £250 for the pair, the RHS comes with throttle tube, wonder if BMW think I might go and buy a pair !!!

There offering the cost of the grips (i think there £200 option on there own) i would have taken it and brought some aftermarket the likes of daytona heated grips (same grips as ktm use) only problem you need 2 right grips if you go down the route of aftermarket because of the tubes.

I don't think there going to give you a new bike because of the heated grips ! Take the money and run :)

£250 is what they cost to purchase. Not what they cost to manufacture. BMW could supply them at actual cost to manufacture as an option...
If they were £100 plus 30 mins dealer labour I would purchase them.

Why should we have to buy them !!! They should be right in the first place. BMW seem to bounce from one **** up to another. Will they ever learn if you **** up put it right quickly and do not give bullshit all the time.
If the 15 grips appear to work in the USA why will BMW UK not try it here instead of giving various bullshit of why they will not work. I am willing to try them out as the 14 grips are not fit for purpose. COME ON BMW stop the crap and lets have some action.

they are saying they won't fit anyway ?

Sounds like some folks here are getting a bit hot and bothered (unlike the grips) :D

And my grips melt my gloves on no 2 :) but then again its the best model gs they made so they going to be better.

Your starting to sound like Jonny Boxer ...................................... and that's not a compliment :comfort

I have just taken my '14 GSA to Lind for a software update in the hope the problem of vitually inoperative heated grips may have been improved. It wasn't in the slightest. However, after complaining I received the following. This has made me feel so much better, just knowing that the tw*ts at BMW think that despite being total crap in operation, it's "working to design". I feel warmer already!!

Quote:
I have sent all your details back to BMW and they have responded

As the bike has no faults and the software is up to date then this is how the grips work due to the new alloy handlebars being a heat sink they are cooler than previous models

This problem has been raised by many customers but the 2015 grips and software can not be fitted to the 2014 model as the bike will see an incorrect resistance so break the circuit causing the grips not to work

So as a dealer we can not change the way the grips work on your bike nor can any other dealer in the network

So from a technical point the system is working correctly

Thicker bars, thinner bars, steel bars, aluminium bars, it's all bollocks.

My bike previous to my 2013 GS was a 2008 Yamaha Fazer 1000. The original handlebars were made of steel. On to these I put some Oxford Sports aftermarket heated grips which got very hot.

After a couple of years, I fancied changing the bars for some Renthals because I preferred the shape and styling and these are made from aluminium. The Oxford grips got changed over and guess what, they were still very hot on the highest setting just like before.

The grips on the left side were fitted directly in contact with the bar whereas the right grip was fitted to the plastic twistgrip and there was no difference in heat.

Someone at BMW has just made up a story for the dealers to tell their customers and make them go away. Well BMW that is not good enough.
Do they think we are stupid ? They should just admit the fact that the grips are are useless and fix them FOC..

I still don't understand why the right grip, which is effectively insulated from the bars, does not heat up as required?

I had 2 R1200R's before getting my '13 GS and heat output was the similar for all 3. But always left grip seems less hot than the right. 5C is about lowest temp. I go out in but find grips adequate. Maybe thick winter gloves provide too much insulation for the palms and therefore grip heat does not get through!

I've mentioned this previously- The 2015 grips are a higher wattage than the 2014's so will produce more heat.

This is fact and was easily confirmed by measuring the resistance.

Perhaps someone could measure ones on the hex head?

Had yet another email from customer bullshit, stating that a manufacturing defect or fault has not been found with my grips and that BMW are unable to provide any further measures to get the grips to behave as I would like them to.

According to BMW the grips are working in the manner they were designed to !! in that case they were designed WRONG.

Have we got a fellow tosser out there who is a solicitor, I would like some legal advice on how we stand about starting a court action against BMW for parts supplied which are not fit for purpose

SO do the 2015 bikes have different handlebars? If not this would blow BMWs argument out of the water.

Both right and left grips are insulated from the metal bars because of BMW stupid design. (Its the same on my S1000RR and so I have to but 2 pairs of rubber grips when I want to change as I cant use the clutch side as the wont fit because of the plastic tube BMW us instead of the grip straight onto the bar).

if grips are insulated from handlebars, then BMW argument about aluminium bars being thicker is complete bullocks! In this case it should not make any difference at all.

Yes and most bikes affected will be coming out of warranty by the time the next winter commences.

The warranty period doesn't apply to latent defects - I think it's 6 years. I've already had the corporate BS from Allan Jefferies, but I want them fixed 😡

So, "superior" German engineers designed heated grips that are useless and these are deemed to be normal.

How do they get away with it.
