Heated hand grips

Engineer, what kind of engineer are you ?

Please, please tell me you are not an aeronautical engineer because you always seem to deny that e problems exist when others are actually experiencing them and I don't just mean the heated grip issues.

I would worry if someone with your attitude was servicing an aeroplane that I was flying in.

I have never denied that some people have problems and if you read my posts you will see that I have repeatedly said so.

Heated grips or the lack of them is not a safety issue (they are an option after all) - safety is the responsibility of the rider - if they have any doubts about their ability to cope with the conditions then they should not ride their bike.

HE'S BACK.... ANY ONE HAVE A TAZER :blagblah

Just got the reply below from BMW UK:

Dear Simon

Thanks for your email regarding the heated grips on your BMW R1200GS.

We’re aware there are people on forums talking about the heated grips on their GS’s. We also come across owners who’ve had a similar experience to you.
As you’ve already said, no corrective action by way of a product recall or quality enhancement has been issued at this time.
I can’t speak for individual Retailers regarding their business decisions and I can see that you don’t want to go to Pidcocks. However, you’ll need to have your bike looked at by a BMW Centre to see what options are available.
There does happen to be a quality enhancement for the multifunction switch outstanding. You will be able to organise this when you speak with your chosen Retailer.

If there’s anything else I can help you with in the meantime, please let me know.

Kind regards

Paul

I find it baffling and disappointing that BMW choose to ignore their dissatisfied customers.
We the customers have kept the Gs (and consequently the BMW brand) at the top of the sales charts for a long while and how do they repay this, by burying their heads in the sand and sitting back enjoying the profits rolling in.

Yes it's only a minor problem, but on a premium bike with a premium price tag, it should be rectified.

think BMW are holding out now by the skin of their teeth! its going to get warmer and this matter will drop …its bound to arise again later on in the year , so I would say keep pressing at them guys and I hope you get what you deserve

I think its shocking by BMW. Its the small things that enhance the ownership experience.

I currently have 2 BMW bikes and am looking for a new car to replace the Audi I am a bit disappointed with. I was looking at BMW's at the same dealer I use for my bikes. I am now going to vote with my feet (and wallet). I will now look elsewhere for the car and the GS will probably be replaced by a KTM or Multistrada and the S1000RR with a Ninja.

It's ironic how they offered to replace the multifunction switch and it's been fine lol!

It's really simple. The heated grips are not broken. They produce the amount of heat that BMW designed them to produce. This may be a little less heat than a few people would like them to produce and probably less than the previous bike but they are not broken and they are fit for purpose since there is no standard they have to meet just a range of expectations that vary from rider to rider.

As soon as they offer a free upgrade to the 2015 grips then they will be opening themselves to a potential huge retrofit bill because even if an owner is not worried about the grips they will be concerned that it will be difficult to sell a 2014 bike that hasn't had the free grip upgrade.

If you think your business is really important to BMW, and your dealer agrees, then a private negotiation will probably get you free 2015 grips but not if you go telling everyone about it because then every man and his dog will feel entitled to them. I've had good will stuff from my dealer because I'm a nice customer and also I keep it to myself.

Spot on.:thumb I spoke to my dealer today about the grips on my S1000, and they said that if they work, BMW will say that there is no specific temperature they have to get to. We may be able to negotiate with BMW, we'll see. But if they ask me not to mention it on forums, I'll understand why.

Perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned the replacement multi-function switch....everyone will want one!

+1 for a sensible view

Internet forums are a double edged sword - they can be genuinely helpful for all sorts of reasons, but once a few people get a bee in their bonnet about a subjective issue all rationality goes out of the window.

I'm not being irrational about complaining that my heated grips do not heat my hands.

They heat my hands, so it is subjective.

Doesn't the performance of other heated grips commonly available remove the subjectivity by establishing a norm?
I've had cheap ones for years and they've all been hot - these are the first where I can't feel any heat while riding in cool temperatures.

My guess is that I have the same grips as yours, 2013GS, I can feel heat from mine, so clearly subjective isn't it? Maybe I am happier with thinner gloves?, I have used BMW Summer Rain Gloves all Winter and now that Winter is coming to an end my grips are far too hot when set to level 2.

Nutty GS ER has given the most sensible advice to date on this subject.
