HELP!!!!! Diesel put in my tank

I’ve done it twice, petrol in a diesel car, diesel in a K1300S, both times something stressful was occurring and I wasn’t paying proper attention.

The diesel in the K1300S, was fixed as I only put a couple of gallons in, I topped up with 98, ran it for a bit and added another load of 98, it was a bit lumpy at times. As I was on my way to my first RoSPA test, when I started do discuss my pre ride and roadworthiness I only said I had filled up.

Good luck, hopefully like me you will get most of it out and refill with 98 after a bit of burping and farting the engine will be fine.

In my group of riding mates my bike is called the mothership.
I am the one that carries all the fixit stuff pump, zip ties, gaffer tape etc. I also carry a length of tube. Only needed it once. Syphoned the tank out, filled up with petrol and 20 minutes later we were on our way.
Everyone calls the GS a tractor or ditch pump etc. So you have probably done it a favour.

Most of the replies so far are utter bollocks.
Syphon out what you can & refill with somenthing other than DERV. Petrol might do.
Now switch on and off the ignition about 12 times without starting bike.
(This will purge fuel lines.)
Now switch on again, start and ride away.
Friend fuelled with DERV in Austria. Full tank. We lost 40 mins. Bike perfect afterwards.

+1.
Syphon out, refill with proper stuff, then restart.
It'll bark and spit a bit for a few miles but you'll be fine.
Was touring with a guy a few years ago from this parish who did the same as you and rectified it with a bit of plastic tube and thirty quid of new fuel.

Geezer who used to be in the same club filled his bike with diesel in Germany. He then drained it out into a drain at the filling station. The staff called the Polizei and he got handed a BIG fine.

I'm more bothered about how the fuck someone can be so inattentive as to put diesel in their petrol engined bike. :augie

Only a complete idiot would do that ....

Or brim their diesel company car (that just happened to be running on fumes) with unleaded and only find out when the diesel fuel card was rejected at South Mimms...

Just keep topping it up with petrol to dilute what's already in the tank. .

Hope the OP comes back to how he got on, as to filling up with wrong fuel I have only done it once, was rushing to get somewhere mind was elsewhere, was in the wife's car which was diesel & not mine which was petrol, put £10 of petrol in. Didn't know until it coughed spluttered 5 miles down the road, then looked at receipt, pulled into next station & filled up with diesel, 100K later car was still going strong.

I was coming back through the Ardennes just under a week ago. Was in some back lanes trying to find my way as a road had been closed !@#$%!

Passed a little fuel station and thought I'd better get onto it as I was unsure how long I was going to be lost

At the pump, all the pump handles were black. Of the three options, two were diesel... I paused because something didn't seem right. After a check I established it was ok, I really did have the petrol pump in my hand not the diesel.

In short, a small distraction and I see how it could be done... I'm just really glad I was paying attention!!

That’s what I did with my car. A seat Alhambra. I had collected wife from hospital 9 year old son had just got 12 teeth pulled 2hour job ended up in a hospital and while I was pulling in to refuel I got news that a very good friend had died. Anyway after 30 liters I noticed I was putting in petrol. Car was running so I just switched to the diesel nozzle. I’d say I had about 50:50 fuel and she ran like a dream. Quietest diesel but a pig to start. My f800GSA was a different story 27 liters in not a chance of diluting it. Siphoned into car and filled with petrol. Bit of easy start clouds of smoke and away she went. Wish I had thought to switch on and off a few times. JJH

I just dumped the contents of my 1150 tank of the diesel and refilled with petrol.
Yes, I had other things on my mind .
Some coughs and spluts but eventually, it started to run normally.

It was the end of a 17 hour day and i was tired!!

.....

update:

Started the bike and very gingerly rode 1.5 miles to the local Halfords, syphoned the tank, added fresh fuel and away she went!

250 miles back to London with no issues whatsoever (apart from the EML still on, not sure if this needs to be reset by the dealer or if it will self correct itself over time!)

A massive thanks to everyone for all of your help, it was a silly mistake to make but it was at the end of a gruelling 12 hour wet ride around the Lake District with also took in the infamous Hardknott Pass....
