HELP!! Engine died on motorway

Zed I burnt a value on an 1150GS after 3 years/ 40k miles. It happened less than 100 mikes after a service (by a BMW dealer) and I'm convinced they mis-adjusted the value clearances. I was doing less than 70 at the time on a motorway. I also ran a full aftermarket exhaust.

I would suggest you get a dealer (not the one that serviced it last) to check value clearances - if they are way out it might help your claim.

The dealer refused to accept any liability but it cost less than £500 to repair (again by an approved dealer) so it might not be as expensive as you might think.

Don't think you can over rev. The limiter will cut ignition and fuel so unless you are overrunning down a cliff - no chance. if it has, then sue BMW, for fitting rubbish limiter.

I've just had the same thing happen. Nursed home very sick indeed. Very noisy, but still running. Noticed that RH exhaust and head stone cold - so no spark or fuel there. Were it not for the clatter, would be looking for injector/sensor problem. Personal favourite is timing chain broken or jumped off pinion. In which case bye bye half an engine. but no holes in the casing and still plenty of oil inside bike and none outside. don't worry about riding home on it - if its a valve, then it's wrecked within .024 seconds anyway.

mine is under non-BMW dealer's 3 month warranty, so I am not touching it until he's hit it with the big hammer

Try a search on failure of right hand cylinder, I've seen a lot of people post with the same failure.

Good luck:comfort

:agree

Quite a bit on the topic if it's the right hand side cylinder. Whilst it hasn't been "officially" recognised as a fault by BMW it is a reasonably common issue on early 1200's. Some potential oil pressure issues on the right hand cylinder.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the design was modified on 06 or 07 models (can't remember which one of the numerous loooong threads I read this on though :augie)

Best of luck with your repair....

Exactly the same happened to a mate on his 2005 model 1200, exactly the same symptoms. Dealer found that right hand piston and rings damaged (during steady state riding, never over revved).

Repaired under goodwill with some cash required on his part, then px'd for a new 1200 Adventure.

Take out r/h cylinder main spark plug. It will be mashed up. Right hand exhaust valves - heads dropped off. You will need new head, valves, cylinder and piston plus associated gaskets for above

spot on ! + new LH piston to maintain perfect balance - fortunately all costs paid as 'goodwill' gesture, even though many months out of warranty:thumb2:thumb2

since then bike has covered a further 8K miles without problem!!
