Help ! Fuel pissing out ....

Just got some confidence to do a bit more of the service work, Changed the Poly V belt, which seamed easy enough, although broke a brand new 6mm hex trying to torque it up and gave in to the large screwdriver wedge underneath it.
Anyway, I’ve just changed the fuel filter, and it all went very well, actually too simple so I knew I’d done something wrong

I changed the filter, didn’t bother changing the O ring and reused the BMW clips. Just pushed them back on. All was well. I even marked the hoses so I didn’t get any mixed up. Put it all back together and rode up the station to partially fill to check for leaks. So I’m sitting at the pump filling the bike, put 10 litres in, put the pump back in the holster and looked down, fuel pissing out the breather hose, I started the bike and rode home and stuck a bucket underneath. Eventually it stopped. Pushed it in the garage and went for a shower.
So, what have I done wrong?
Any help would be much obliged

You've connected the breather hose to the wrong pipe (I also did this), had to tie the ose up in a loop with a cable tie! thought the Packy in the shop was about to call the fire brigade!. You only do it once! give up smoking as this helps with leaks!.

Sounds like the breather or overflow hose has become detatched inside the tank.
The reason it's stopped is the fuel level is now below the attachment point.


Which means fuel pump cover off and all the internals out again

Could this have happened when i was pulling on the hoses to get it all out?

Oh hum....

This means having to take out the filler gubbins

Before i take it all out again, is there any chance that if i did mix up the two pipes i did disconect (refere to picture) this would cause my fuel to run out the overflow/ breather pipe.

You might not have intentionally disconnected them but does not mean it is not disconnected

Yes, Agreed, however, Before i take it all apart again, would mixing them two pipes cause the fuel to piss out the breather pipe hanging down by the right foot peg ?
Just want to check this before i start taking it all aprt again.

This happened to me.

I always had a very slight drip from the breather by the RH footpeg when the tank was brim full but when I changed the filter it got much worse.

Exactly as Steptoe says above, it was the breather / tank neck drain hoses. It looks like the original hoses had softened with age and a full tank had enough head to cause the tiny leak. When I disturbed them changing the filter it made the tiny leak much worse.

I ended up taking it all to bits and I re-piped all the tank internals with new hoses and standard fuel injection clips - problem solved

Thanks for that, Ok strip it down again then. The only question is, if it has come away from the filler neck overflow, does this mean the pipe has fallen down inside, to be able to empty all fuel ? If you know what i mean, because how can the fuel empty if the opening is at the top of the tank ?

I guess it will all come clear when i take it all apart again.

Yup - that was the issue with mine. It hadn't actually come away - fuel was just passing between the pipe and the spigot on the pump plate.

Also, as per the book, i rested my new shiney tank on a nice soft blanket to protect it. It has now stained the paint Brown, no rubbing with T Cut works, how F****g pleased about that am i

And now one of the FEckin nuts is just spining on its thread. Cant get the fecker off. And it has to be the one right up under the top fold. Unbelievable

Hacksaw. When you put it back on put some washers on it so it grips the thread further up the shaft.

Also move your fuel filter external to you tank so you don't have to **** about like this again

Why did you remove those pipes .

The only pipe i remove when changing the fuel filter is the pipe attached to the fuel filter. I leave everything else attached and just let the fuel pump housing hang outside the tank aperture.

I had to remove those pipes to take the tank off. I know you do it all with the fuel tank resting on the cylinder, but I wanted to have the tank completely off.

Have given it my guy to sort the lot out. He is going to fit them quick connectors thingys. He will then give it to the bloke in the unit next to him to try and get the brown marks out of the paintwork.
Stick to what i know me thinks....

"MR Sheen" furniture polish aerosol, (dunno if youse get it over there) spray on, leave for 5 mins and wipe off, and your brown stains (on the bike) should be gone.

Don't give up thats how you LEARN get a pair of clips for fuuel in ectors from you local motor shop these have normal screw clamps and easily come off and go back we all do things like that so don't get discouraged.
