Read your handbook , all is revealed.

the little "rider's manual" i have doesn't say anything about what type of oil and the haynes manual just gives a diagram showing what oils work at what temperature ranges, and 20/50 is shown as almost exactly the same as 15/40?

help!

I went to buy my 20/50 from north Oxford BMW and they tried to sell me 15/40 semi synthetic saying that is what I should use... That confused me for a while, but I decided to stick to what has been recommended here. So far so good, no sign of leakage yet so it's seems my panic was not called for! :o ...

However, there is a new concern :eek ...Sorry everyone, it seems as quickly as you solve my problems I'm finding new ones... Well, this time the problem is, under heavy braking there is an electronic sounding beep noise, not too dissimilar to the sound when you turn the ignition on. It doesn't happen every time so it's been hard to work out if it's happening when applying front or back brakes. I had a check of the brakes and the front brake pads (the outside pad of the R/H, and on the inside of the L/H) move when turning the wheel from one direction to the other. Is this supposed to happen? It doesn't seem right to me, but what would I know, I panic when the wheels go round

When you turn the ignition on,the sound you hear is the fuel pump pressurising the injection system. That similar noise you hear may be the ABS cutting in under heavy breaking.
Brake pads.Do they move when the front brake is applied and the bars turned?.Does the front wheel spin freely when brakes not applied?.
It may be worth having the calipers off and cleaning/checking them.
The rear one has a tendency to wear its pads rapidly i believe.Good luck.

I don't have ABS, so not sure what else it could be :nenau ..The front wheel turns, but I wouldn't say it spins freely the is alot of rubbing from the brakes so it only turns when I turn it and stops as soon as I let go.

Do they move when the front brake is applied and the bars turned?...Not sure what you mean by this, I assume they would do the same as when the bars are straight, but will check tomorrow and let you know. Thanks :thumb

There is oil left, but only about 1/4 of the way up sight glass.

It's not leaking oil, it's burning it. They all do that, even new ones. Don't worry about it

Anyone else have an idea what the beeping sound could be? I am not keen on riding it till I can work it out, everytime I have to brake hard (yes i've tried not braking hard, but to be honest it doesn't have to be that hard, anyway, you try explaining the problem to Buckinghamshires lovely 'bike blind' car drivers.) I'm always waiting for something bad to happen.
