I've just upgraded to Basecamp and a Nav V, from Mapsource and a series of earlier Garmins. I have put my saved waypoints in Basecamp into various lists, which I assume is the same as using "Categories" in Mapsource. When I transfer these lists to the Nav V, they do not appear as separate lists - all the waypoints are jumbled together. Am I doing something wrong or missing a trick somewhere down the line?

Wish I could have stayed with Mapsource, but Mapsource stopped recognizing any of my devices. When I spoke to Garmin about it they said Mapsource isn't supported any more - plus my Garmins were too old to be supported as well. So i didn't have much choice in the matter.

Happy to try and help but first of all why do you want loads of way points stored in your Nav V ?

if you have your way points etc on basecamp you should only need to use them for creating a route which you then transfer to the device.

As a starting point though in the upper left hand pane of basecamp you will have "my collection" and what i have in there are folders that i have created to store routes and way points in You can name these folders anything you like) and from these i drag and drop or copy and paste into any new routes that i am creating (this is in the lower left pane of basecamp) and when the route is done I just transfer it to the device although i tend to use the way points as shaping points so it keeps the route simple. there is a huge thread on here somewhere about the difference between way points and shaping points. and this will become essential to you later on your journey of NAV 5 discovery !

Make sure that you have basecamp and the unit on the same updates and with the same settings

In early versions of Basecamp the lists did equate to categories but that disappeared in later versions.

If you open up a waypoint in Basecamp (double click on it) there is a categories tab where you can add your own categories for waypoints. These will transfer to the Zumo when you send the waypoint to it.

This is the category tab I referred to earlier.

Thanks daesimps. That's answered my query - it works just as I wanted it to. I am not using these waypoints as part of a route but as individual destinations for a club competition. Brilliant, thanks again.

No problem. In the earlier releases any waypoints were automatically categorised with a name that matched the list(s) that they waypoint was in in Basecamp. That featured then disappeared in one of the updates.

In addition, you can also still organise POIs on the unit as before. I have folders of POIs for stuff like cafes, bike services etc. I store these in regular directories on my computer and use the Garmin POI loader to transfer them.

Basecamp is OK as a repository for a limited amount of data (routes, tracks, waypoints etc) but too much and it starts to bog down so I try to limit what I keep in there and have a number of small Basecamp data bases rather than one big one.

To keep stuff separated on transfer to the unit, you can highlight a single individual item and transfer the "selected user data" rather than a list containing several items.
