i have an 86 K100, which i have been using as my daily commute for the past couple of months with no issues whatsoever.

Last night i rode home (32 miles) no warning lights on the dash and bike ran as sweet as a nut, on arriving home turned of the ignition and removed the key and the battery charge light (red) illuminated and did not go out, i put the keys back in the ignition and tried all positions, with the ignition turned on the light went out but with the key removed it was illuminated.
Left the bike overnight and this morning the red light was still illuminated but not as bright and obviously there was not enough power left in the battery to turn the engine over.

I must admit to being stumped, anyone out there with any ideas:thumb2

many thanks in advance.

get a long screw driver place the end on the starter motor give the onther end a sharp tap with a hammer and see if the light goes out if it goes out i.ll tell you why if it doesent it was worth a go

Ill try! ill get the battery charged up over the weekend and see what happens, intriguing:thumb

When the starter motor brushes are worn all sorts of weird electrical problems can materialise. Something to do with some circuitry being channelled through the brushes.

exactly thats why mines in bits stopped near half the bike working got us home tho just made it home befor it got to dark no lights no indicators no horn no starter an the old dog still run :D

Not sure about alternator light on v starter brushes

They are the earth for the lighting and other bits

sounds more like you have a diode breaking down in the alternator

Probably too late now but if you need to isolate the battery without removing the under-seat tray and ICU etc to get at the terminals, just undo the allen screw (arrowed) and pull the lead away (I stick a bit of old innertube over it to avoid accidental contact):
