Well boyos the bike is still imobile the techie garage guy is going to look in more depth tommorow . He had the diagnostic tool plugged in but it showed no faults. The battery is fine but no indicators, stop lights horn or main beam. Also brake failure light flashing. Warning triangles are off but no brakes! All this seems to have come about from battery being lo. But scratching many heads I'm lost
Any Samaritans out there with some better brain than little me. Thanks

Miff the techie guy seemed to know his stuff so I guess he would have checked that also it surely would have shown an error code. Thinking myself, when I used to service some of our old Diesel engines we had a funny leccy fault once and it was down to a corroded earth strap. Not sure where the earth strap terminates on the GS I think I remember it is somewhere near the alternator.

Duff ignition switch??

unlikely, the 1200 ign switch has 1 wire in and 1 out,it just powers up the body control module
is your tech using a GS911?
has the tech done a global test?(checking all ecu's)
it is unusual for a 1200 to show no faults at all, from your previous thread it should at least have a low battery voltage fault logged, the body control module may have shut some circuits down for some reason, and may not power them up until the codes are cleared
make a note of any codes, clear the codes and try again

Mikeyboy trouble is I'm 40 miles from garage the tech guy I spoke to seems to know his stuff. I know from being a retired engineer ( well a fishy type anyway) I am carefull of telling granny how to suck eggs you know. He says there are no fault codes logged!! The battery initially was a bit sluggish but I just presumed when I first noticed all these faults that it was down on charge, but maybe not! What do you think about a floating earth prob. Being retired on not much pension long sessions of highly paid work is worrying

Main earth point is top left (looking forward) of the engine, you can't miss it with the tank off. It sounds like something really simple like a bad earth or really major like the ZF unit.

Depends what is broken about it. There is a chance it simply can't report faults because it isn't speaking out. If your spanner man has only read for faults he wouldn't know the ZF isn't talking. You would have to go and look for live data to see there wasnt any.
Is all just theory as I have no idea what the guy is using to look at the computers.

Well they seem a clued up bunch, I always found them very very helpful. Plus they have a team that regularily do the TT. To be honest I'm not mentioning a main dealer I had dealings with I would mucho trust these boys that have my bike. Just don't understand how BM stuff is so difficult to suss. We at the beginning of the noughties had moved on to computer controlled gear in our fish processing but I can't remember ever having a dark hole like some of BM' s probs to get out of.

Don't know about that gear but I have messed with control units on boats and they aren't the easiest to fathem out either.
In theory computers should be easier to work out because they tell you what's wrong.
Note I said in theory lol.

I suppose if you grew up with some process equipment you understand it even when it changes from belts springs etc to PC's stepper motors et all. But this can bus single wire into control and ecu,and the lot linked with programmed chips I'm afraid loses me. It seems so open ended or maybe that's just me feeling old. Well I am. Funny remember pops saying his dad used to fish for herring all around the UK with sails and compass we seem to have lost control of some basics!!

CAN bus itself is no mystery. It's just a network similar to a computer network like your wifi or the Internet. It gets blamed for a lot of things that it simply can't do because people don't know what it is. It's like blaming your wifi for a file getting deleted on your pc.

Well understood, but obviously something has flaked out in my old GS. I have spent three hours going through most Gs forums and have come up with no real answers. A lot of suck it and see and some well thought out potential solutions but nothing the seems to collate a solution with my probs. funny when stuck with some problems in my fishy domain I used to run them off my bro ( who was as un technical as you can be) and sometimes he would think of an answer to what I thought was quite a techy prob. I will give him,a call as I'm at the end of my little thought processes. Second thoughts I wont!, thanks guys for your input John

Fishy The ECU just switches stuff on and off

For example the fuel pump relay on top of the fuel pump the ECU sends a pulse / signal and the pump starts and stops

What happens when they lie down is the solid state board is usually fried from water ingress "but" the ECU still sends the signal to pump fuel

Same with the Antenna ring issue The ECU sends a pulse but does not receive anything back as it does not know the antenna has a broken wire and has not transmitted at all

You won't get fault codes for either of those (just an EWS code on the dash as Key not recognized)

If the K line is damaged or the transceiver for the K line is burnt out it cant report fault codes if that makes sense

Yep Doc but but
The weird thing is the motor fires everything about that is normal just the weird no indicators, horn brake lights etc. I would have thought that if the ecu was out surely the motor wouldn't run. Also forgot to mention fuel, temp, trip miles, lcd display working ok. I'm off for a bath so guys expecting a eureka moment from some one!!!!!!

Engine ecu is completely separate from the ZF unit. ZF unit is basically a fancy fuse box that controls the lights, indicators, horn and stuff. Make more sense now?

Aye fishy was it not you that I had mentioned this about the various control units and put prices of the ZFE units from motorworks up for you

Theres an Engine Controller BMS-K that only does the engine running stuff

Above that there is the ZFE unit which is the controller for the peripheral equipment Horns Lights etc

The clocks have a small ECU

The ABS unit has an ECU

The more complicated the bike the more control systems

It's a brilliant system. A fault on the auxiliary systems, instruments or data network in no way prevents BMS-K from keeping the pistons moving.

OP's problem sounds common to ZFE or it's data connection.

if you check under the ignition switch you will find there are two micro switch's there, my money is one of these is dirty/faulty.
one switch is for engine management and the other is for indicators and stuff,
