Well bike has been back on road about 4 weeks after off road for 3 weeks as it took 8 weeks for BMW (not dealer) to deliver all parts for a new final drive to be fitted. Everything ok until last weekend when came to start bike which fired up but died straight away, 20 attempts to start then battery flat.
Called emergency services, and technician came, he seemed to know fault, you guessed it fuel pump or to be more precise the can bus controller on top of the fuel pump. Amazingly technician was carrying spare part which he replaced jumped battery and bike started. Sunday came bike was running like a pig, revs were erratic when stood still trying to keep at 3000rpm, they fluctuated between 2000rpm and 5000 rpm yet when ridden it was ok. Tried biking on Wednesday night everything ok.

Friday night (18/11/04) not wishing to be caught out like last week and missing half a days riding I thought I would start bike and check ok.

Well you guessed it. Bike started then died straight away, after 10 attempts it started and would idle but as soon as I gave it any throttle it died.

So Saturday I wont be again riding my bike as I have pre arranged recovery for 7.30am Sat morning, to take to dealers to hopefully fix. Just what I need after a stressful week at work.

If this is the going to continue to happen I will have to think again whether I want a BMW, I love the 1200 but its got to be reliable, so far it has not.

Oh Dear!!!

Bloody hell Martin!

Not the best of news - how about rejecting bike and asking for a new one?

Don't think many will be out tomorrow though due to icy home streets
Me, Swooper and John certainly not.

Bmw spend millions of £'s (Euro's) on development and then give it to you for a few months, eh? !!!!!

Keep your chin up - SWMBO might wear her new helmet!

Sherps;)

Icy Streets No problem

Sherpa no problem!!!!
Icy streets no problem I have arrangedfor my my GS to have a four wheel drive conversion for tomorrow morning I have arranged for a 2cwt truck to carry me and the bike until the roads are ok all you need is an unreliable BMW and hey presto icy roads no problem.

I had a similar problem some months ago, it appeared to be related to the sidestand being down while starting, now i get on the bike first, flip the stand up and then start the bike, no problems since,...worth a try?

My bike is the same. With the sidestand down it starts for a few seconds and then stops.

Seems very odd that it starts in the first place with the s/stand switch closed.

BMW and odd, now there's a novelty:D

You may find that when started from cold (with a little clutch drag) the rear wheek turns whilst on the centre stand. If the side stand is in the down position as well, the on board computer system sensors the wheel movement and believes that the bike is in gear and/or moving with the side stand down. It then cuts the power.

If you try with the side stand up, I guess it will not create the same problem.

I may be wrong. If so it was just a theory.

Best of luck mate. Let us know how you get on.

your theory is correct. but i find it still odd. my previous bmw (r1150r) didn't have this 'problem'. the rearwheel didn't turn so fast either...

I encountered a similar problem myself today. A mate suggested sidestand up starting method as well.

I wonder with this new CANBUS system if the bike is not too smart for its' own good. My horn stops working every time I use the dip switch but resets when I turn ign off/on, not recommended while on the move :nono

Can I refer everyone to my post in the "942 1200GS's sold this year" thread. Post ID 281946.
Can i assume from your postings that you don't have a 1200GS?

Theory on why wont start.

Funny I had come to the same conclusion about the side stand as I know that now it is getting colder and damp this will create even more clutch drag, this would also expalin why sometimes once I had got it to start and tickover, when i gave it some throtte is cut out as this increased the rear wheel movement due to clutch drag.It started ok this morning.

I will keep you all posted, hope we are all right as when the dealer checked bike over no faults were found.

Try my job Martin. That would open your eyes to stress.
Has your computer got spell checker on it? Switch it on for us please there's a good chap :P

You may find that when started from cold (with a little clutch drag) the rear wheek turns whilst on the centre stand.

When hot or cold, starting in neutral with the clutch engaged i.e. 'situation normal' the clutch won't drag, because it's fully engaged anyway.

The rear wheel spin in neutral when cold is due to the viscosity of the oil in the gearbox.

Next time I'll start the bike with the stand down and one toe on the rear wheel to check your theory out. I don't think it'll hold water but you never know.

From another teacher teaching juveniles in prison - now there's stress for you;)

Thanks for that - I was wondering what it was that caused that effect.
