Collected yesterday and done a couple hundred miles, it'll need the usual fettling and tinkering to tidy up some bits and pieces, but at the moment I'm just getting used to it.

Well, I've done about 300 miles on her since picking her up yesterday, and I guess I'm starting to get a feel for her now, getting used to short shifting and using the torque instead of the revs (like the VFR)

There are some strange noises at various times, that I have got to put a finger on, one like a rattle when I let the clutch out on take off, so I'm guessing Thrust bearing (does it have one?) It's a dry clutch in the boxer engine (like a car) isn't it? as opposed to "normal" wet clutch in most bikes.
Also sounds a bit whiny in third, but I guess that's probably worn cogs in the gearbox

As I said, The bike is 16 years old with nearly 60,000 miles on it, so it's gonna have some stuff that's worn will need fettling/repairing/replacing, this much I know and accept, but for me it's an entry into the world of the adventure bike, and after only 24 hours I can already see the appeal of this versatile machine.

Mrs Fester seemed pleased with the difference in comfort for herself from the VFR (just back from a long weekend in France), and today actually started talking about riding to Spain ( I suggested a shorter trip first ) or Germany (better for a start I think), whereas she had always refused to entertain such a trip on the VFR, so that can only be a good thing :clap

Lucky man, what a beaut. I've got a '96 1100GS with 57,000 miles, all black like yours but with the red seat. Yours looks shinier though! I think the 1100 is the best looking of the oilhead GSs.

Funny noise

If its got Abs, then you will get a funny little noise just as you set off after you have started it up.- its the ABS setting itself up. "They all do that sir..."
But only on the first motion of the wheels after starting the engine, not at every release of the clutch....

It's a definite clunk/rattle and does it every time I release the clutch a little sharply, not so bad if I "feather" it out

Backlash in the shaft drive taking up? My 1150 makes all manner of odd noises (and has done since new), I don't really hear them now. The shaft backlash was very obvious when I moved from chain driven bikes to a Guzzi; having got used to that I didn't notice the BMW too much.

Earplugs are a good idea for oh so many reasons ... I'd suggest you just ride for a bit and get a feel for what's "normal". 60k isn't much, 'least I hope not 'cos I'll be doing that service shortly.

Oh, and it is a dry clutch.

Loooks nice Fester,Hoping to get my 98 MOT'd next week (just got one more exhaust stud to replace) and getting to know it over the summer before engaging in some restoration work next winter.

I had been looking for an R100RS for quite a while, then saw this 1100gs and really liked it.

Yes, I always wear earplugs due to wind noise, but I'll do as you suggest and ride it for a while and try to get a feel for it and it's "normal" noises.
It could be the clutch and shaft that I'm hearing, so I'll keep an ear out for that.

Fester,
When cold, I hear odd clutch release noises. My most significant cold noise is alternator belt slippage. But everything seems to quiet down after the bike warms up.
Pictured is my 'new-to-me' 1999 R1100GS. Wow! I love the tractor like pull of the machine. I know the bike is heavy and old-school but the big GS came at a price that allowed me to remain happily married. I have the Heidenau K60s in hand, hopefully they will go on this weekend. I'm also considering the HyperPro shocks. I don't know, ... is that an indication of more money than sense?
