Hey BMW - You lost another sale...

How old is it and how many miles has it done ?

First of the 18 plate , 12k ( thrashed / no commuting . pleasure miles only as I live on the boarders of riding heaven ) ridden all weathers ( well apart from covid reduced ridding time) and it has been great , problem free and better than the 16 plate it replaced .

My general approach when deciding on suitability or competence of a new bike: read and understand Giles' comments and opinions carefully.

Then do exactly the opposite.

I agree with Boxerlust's sentiments: we ride bikes to go fast, get the rush from the best power to weight ratios we can. Even if we don't use the top speed (and where can you, away from autobahn of track?), there's all the fun of really quick acceleration. The difference on the open road between 130 and 170 bhp is noticeable everywhere. If KTM or Ducati can get that kind of horsepower from a 1200+ cc twin, why can't BMW?

I'm looking for a new bike now, but I won't be looking at a BMW twin. If I want "adequate" power, I might as well buy a boring Honda 750. I want to use full power, as often as possible, to get the juices flowing. Otherwise I'll take the car.

The open road is the easy part , 130 / 160 on tech roads are even , the BMW for me out handles the conventional suspension bike all day , day after day . Been there done it and chatted with the guys after , best part is we all had fun ( but I was faster lol)
I remember so many great rides in the mountains with great riders , mainly on BMW and KTM , both perfect bikes for the job .
Best comment ever was " i have never seen a GS backing into a corner , shit , then you we gone.. " Germany guy in Spain

No .. he's right!

A good road bike must have a centre stand and panniers otherwise its just utterly shite!

I am suuuuuch an idiot ..... :blast :blast

And the RS doesn’t have enough ground clearance!

Careful Giles, he may be..............motorcycle Yoda!!!!

Our 88 Paralever has the comfiest seat Anna has sat on - her own conclusion and the reason it won't be for sale. It is plenty fast enough with its 65hp and cruises happily at 65mph two up until the tank is empty. Going up in value too, not depreciating. Happy days.

Oh and it has a centre stand and panniers.

These post's shock me, I don't know why you guys rise to the bait. Certain members use emotive language to provoke more emotive language back. it's amusing for a while but then you realise what's happening. Our US friend always wants a dual with someone who would have to travel across 8 time zones during a pandemic, on the road or area he rides often if not only, on a bike he clearly isn't happy with because it's not got enough power or a 17inch front wheel. In his opinion every other bike is shite apart from the ones he has or wants. Same with some others on here; their bike is the best there is, even if it's not the bike that this forum is about, yet they still hang around here, nothing wrong with that. riding bikes as a leisure activityis not necessarily about tear arsing around at top speed it's about the experience and experiencing different things. On here, we're all bikers (I think) who like bikes (I think), this is what biking is all about.

Look I've risen to it myself now :blast

I found out recently that I have a bike that is riddled with problems, it has too little power to be enjoyable, the front wheel is too small, the colour is wrong, I have a bike that's a boat anchor that won't pull the skin off a rice pudding (although if I tried it probably would), that's only for posers to ride and nothing else. Yet this isn't my personal experience, i'm happy with what I have, for now. For me that's all that matters right now until I decide to change 1 or both for another experience that I'll equally enjoy. Although I didn't realise until recently, must be a poser that can't scrape my GS's pegs as hard as I try, if I (not often) ever feel the need to do that I have take the boat anchor out and pose with trailing sparks off every roundabout, that does it easily.

In all honesty I always thought bikers were a like minded (or similar) kind of "club", in my 40 odd years of riding I've never thought any different, only when I read some of the shite that creates threads the size of these ones. Amazing.

Until someone develops a washing machine that has a tele-lever front end, has over 160 HP, has a boxer twin, is 40kg lighter 17inch front wheel and isn't orange, will wheelie, and won't wheelie, is a on-road/off-road bike that is only for on-road  (Of corse if it was purely on road it wouldn't be a GS would it? Even us humble bike riding non-german speakers know what GS stands for):confused:

And while ever people respond with emotive passion then they will continue to be the most active posts that forums need.

Mate .... until you can ride at between 130 and 160 on 'tech roads' and then back a bike into a corner and feck off into the distance ...... I should keep quiet .... :D

Well at least you’ve now realised that. Be grateful to the muricun :beerjug:

I once revved my bike nearly all the way to the redline, by the way. Admittedly not full throttle, but nearly full. THAT is how manly I am...

I'll PM John McGuiness and let him know he's missing a trick on the TT and he should in fact be on a GS .... :thumb2

(I regularly see him backing it in on the TT too ..... )

I was on about the BHP old chap , keep up and check you glasses , or you ability to read lol.

I,m with Quinten & Stick ! BMW has to get their heads out of their azzes and give the boxer more top-end because it is exiting and fun and takes the last reason away to buy a KTM or Ducati !
As also a XR version of the GS or M1300GS for people like me or Stick and thousands others who ride hard on paved roads and see the GS as a comfortable and practical sport-bike would be aweosome ven if a 1250GS with sports-suspension and cast wheels is already a great bike !
And Stever where is the bad BMW quality ? Quality and reliability is always great but I had 19 boxers in my life and I really never had big problems...Looking back I had a bad rear-drive seal on a R1100S and 2 leaky rear main seals on 2 2012 cam-heads and a uneven machined flywheel on a R100R that caused the clutch to slip...All fixed under warranty and then these bikes gave me 50-65K miles of reliable service. My 1250's were flawless but I got a new battery this year due to my own fault not riding enough except for one 6000 mile holiday trip...Paint and castings are great but I also don't ride in winter on salty roads...But tell me what are these great bikes that are so much more reliable and of better build quality than a BMW 1250 GS ? THey must come from a different planet because I don't know of any...What I will say though I can do without keyless, could use 2 full size hardbags, prefer analog gauges to an I-phone screen and could use a boxer with 160-170 hp for an exiting top-end rush :thumby: THat would be finally enough because anything more on a upright bike would be taken away anyways by traction control...So what is the point unless you are on a full forward crouch like a S1000RR where everything above 200 hp probably don't make a difference anymore...
And yes I would love a modern version of the still sexy looking and fun to ride and practical R1100S...What would be not to love - a modern boxer that looks sexy, has Telelever and is equally fun to ride on the occasional trackday and still practical enough not to bust your balls everyday or on a vacation trip in summer :thumby: I get exited :thumb Better than blue pills...Much better :thumb
And Giles sorry but a S1000XR is better than any Tuono even if it doesn't sound like a Ford 17M V-4 with a sports silencer on it :D
The RSV4 is much better than the upright Tuono on the track on on the road just as useless as a Tuono without centerstand and hard-bags to carry your stull dry&secure on a road-trip...Just another useless play-toy for a couple hours on a sunday afternoon...Not more, not less with a few dealers here and there and hard to get by parts...Italian shit called soul ;) Enjoy ! Vespa can't survive selling only scooters to girls...:D THe RS660 is a nice beginner bike though. If I had a son getting into riding I would by him one...Much better than the gutless japanese high-revving 600 cc 4 cylinder shit...I should say also 1000cc 4 cylinder shit as the new Fireblade below 8000 rpm is even weaker than a CBR600...If this is even possible.Superior japanese engineering meets crazy/stupid EU regulations...At least BMW came up with shit-cam to show the azzholes Brussels the middle-finger :thumby:
Happy New Year - It can only get worse...:beerjug:

Don't worry Giles revved it way past the red line that day you let him have a go on it (and I followed him on Cato!) ;) :D

Yay! Boxerlust is "with me!" I feel so proud, so accomplished...

Boxerlust, old love, I'm sorry to have to tell you I was taking the piss. Anyone who thinks they need 160 bhp on the road, or will actually be any quicker than a bike with 130, is clearly living with their head so far up their own arse that it's only the speed hump on your leathers that's stopping you completing the job.

What makes a good road bike will vary from one person to the next and it's opinionated twats like you, so convinced that you're right and everyone else is wrong, that makes me glad I don't have to have regular conversations with (a) bikers and (b) Americans.

I've never been more than 140 mph on a bike (autobahn) and that was for a few seconds before fears of "what if the front wheel bearing implodes now?" made me slow down. Only ever been on a track once and maxed out at 120. I don't measure the success of a ride by how fast I went, but by by how much I enjoyed it. I am very happy to concede that for any bike over 500cc, the limiting performance factor is going to be me, not the bike.

If you think that you need that extra horsepower, and can use it, I'm surprised we haven't heard of you as a highly successful racer. As that clearly isn't the case, I rather suspect you are either deliberately winding people up, or are one of those pathological dreamers who genuinely believes the complete and utter bullshit you post. Either way: do fuck off.

King Rat...Had a R100GS like that but mine was black&yellow...Great memories. My first BMW coming from japanese 4 cylinders.Never looked back.Did my first Mexico trip on it.Put holes in the valve covers after I took the crash bars off and relocated the oil cooler in Laguna Seca. With only 58hp it still was a formidable back road weapon on the backroads in Norcal...Guys on sportbikes felt demoralized getting passed...by a lowly BMW pipe & slippers boxer.Cut my riding teeth on it despite having a bouncy fork,no power,no brakes and in nneed of a new diode board and driveshaft u-joints every 25K miles...The R1100GS was soo much better.50% more power and Telelever :thumby: And more reliable and not to forget...ABS :bow with good for their day Brembo stoppers !

Don't worry Giles revved it way past the red line that day you let him have a go on it (and I followed him on Cato!) ;) :D

I downloaded the track data from the sat nav as soon as I got home. I knew EXACTLY how fast he went, and where. I'm saving the data for blackmail purposes.
