I get around 50 mpg (miles per gallon) motorway driving at around 75-80mph on my R1150GS

Speedo & odometer on the oilheads read over by around 10% unless they've been corrected.
At 50mpg, you're really only getting about 45mpg, which is the same as me. At 250kms to a tank, it's really about 225kms (140 miles) which seems low. I got around 160-180 miles/tank with my style of riding which is usually twisty roads, etc...... How much fuel do you put in at each refill? At 45mpg, I would expect 160 miles at least, before the warning light comes on.

Round town work on a 1200 does 195miles to 22ltr = 40mpg. Haven't done a full run out to see what I'd get, but with 50% motorway work I've had 230miles = 48mpg.
My 600cc sportsbike got about 27mpg round town + 33mph on a run, to I think that the economy of the GS's is spot on.

Have a look at the fuel consumption survey in this forum.
My 2001 1150gs normally returns about 44-45 mpg probably 70% of my miles are motorway at 90+ the rest is blitzing thru traffic hard accelerating etc. not too sure about the speedo 10% thing mine seems to be ok.
But lets apply a bit engineering logic. speedos of the type fitted to our fantasic machines are often out slightly because the cable drives a gear to the odometer and a small pemanet magnet in side the speedo, the speedo needle has a steel cup surrounding the magnet and a spring holding it at zero, as the magnet spins the magnetic force pulls the needle against the spring hence giving a reading on the speedo faster it spins - further the needle goes. although manufacturers strive to make them accurate because there is no direct mchanical drive to the needle they cannot be guarenteed and can be up to 10% out hence the 10% tolerence applied to speeding checks(normally).
But the mileometer(odometer) has a direct mechanical drive from the wheel and I dont believe for a moment that the bofins at BMW have got the gearing 10% out, apart from anything else this could give a speedo reading upto 20% out.

Sorry - wrong!!!!
Mine over-reads by 9-point-something percent when compared to the GPS
Artman, both the speedo & odo are driven from a gear on the front wheel spindle. This is marked as 3.0 on the housing, meaning 3:1 ratio & it will cause your speedo & odo to over read by 10% or thereabouts. Check it against a GPS, as LittleRed says, & see for yourself.
You can get a speedo drive marked 2.9 from the RT model (actually 2.875:1 ratio) which corrects both the speedo & odo to tolerable levels.
I've swapped to alloy wheels & fitted a 2.6:1 speedo drive to deal with it.

Sorry Paul forgot to mention that the cable is driven directly from the front wheel by a gear but then that wasnt the end of the cable that i was talking about.
So you guys of infinate Knowlege, why has mr BMW decided to fit a part to all his r1150gs's that gives misleading information readouts to the riders?
Is it to make us ex-sportsbike riders feel that we still have the speed! or maybe to try and convince us mere mortals that the mighty BM is somthing that it aint?
Whatever I don't really give a sh*t just keep thrashing it!!

What I was getting at was that there isn't any problem with the speedo itself, just the drive ratio at the f/wheel. Why B*W have done this has been a mystery since the first person on AdvRider pointed out the difference between the speedo & the GPS they were using. I think it started with the 1100GS's as the drive was from the gearbox on the older models.
