Hi Viz Jacket ex Plod

I saw one this afternoon.....a guy on a white ST1100 wearing a similar hi-viz jacket. He'd had the good grace not to wear a white lid. I think there's something a bit sad about people who tread close to the line of impersonating a Police Officer.

Where was it, sounds like one of the guys on the shift. I'll ask at work tomorrow. Was it a black lid?

Tomorrow in the comfort and privacy of my own home...........I will be wearing this :D

As someone who used to wear this stuff at work, I'm not convinced it aids conspicuity when on a bike (except perhaps being seen in a rear view mirror and that's of questionable benefit).

The idea of this stuff for police is not as an aid when on the bike, it's for when you are off it at the side of the road dealing with something.

It sure as hell aids filtering - like Moses doing the Red Sea

Just bought this on E-Bay for Biking & Cycling........

HiViz works :rob I wear standard workmans HiViz wear on the commute and it has the same miraculous effect of instantly turning slack, selfish arsehole drivers into model driving citizens and it keeps you drier than Arizona :thumb

My Dad used to work for the local electric board, and had an abundance of HiVis clothing. The big yellow jacket had 'Norweb' front and back, picted out on a blue patch, exactly where it would say 'Police'.

One particular day he was out on his bike going over the moors towards Holmfirth when he finds himself in a slow moving cue of traffic. AS he's making his way along in his own sweet time he gets closer to the hold up and realises it's an accident with police and ambulance already on scene.

Now being a good fella he doesn't filter past the queue until he's close enough to realise that the copper controlling the traffic is pointing at him, and then waves him forward... and just as my Dad gets nearby, he sees the copper do a double take and then start smiling as my Dad rides past.

....I've consider getting a hi viz vest for sometime as much people who use them swear by them.

...I'm not sure that I will look that convincing as a plod on the
K12R though...:bounce1 :bounce1

After reading all that....

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Obsolete-Ex-P...a_RL?hash=item56358eb048&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14

just done a Bikesafe course this weekend and the hi-viz was awesome....

I ride a bumblebee BMW K12S and mainly black gear

Stuck on the issue hi-viz and traffic just disappeared - this has to be better... but - is it too sad top wear an ex-police job (albeit cheaper!!) ? Or just wear a plain version?

I am aiming to be seen better - not impersonate a copper!!

Just don't become too reliant on wearing HI VIZ and assuming the the general driving public will see you on a bike.
If we can loose fully marked up vans with six flashing blue lights on the roof, two in the front grille , plus headlight flashers and 100 plus decibel wailers because people pull out of junctions into there path on the way to emergency calls a HI VIZ jacket isn't going to help.
I've even been at an accident where someone pulled out into the path of a fire service turntable ladder in the dark when it had all of its emergency equipment switched on . For gods sake the things are 30 foot long and 10 foot high and you can see and hear them about a mile away.
This also doesn't include the idiot who managed to drive into the rear of a Highways Agencies crash Cushion vehicle which was halfway down a mile long straight road !!!!

here we go again

:mmmm Thank you Neil!

the insewerance companies call it "risk compensation" -
you're taking a risk (riding a Bike) / you compensate (wearing the hi viz).

imho,
those that bother looking will see you sooner, but those that dont - yes, you could dress like a clown / xmas tree / disco light setup and the buggers would STILL pull out on you and then declare SMIDSY! :blast

as always - your own brain is the best safety device you got :thumb2

but it's a personal choice- dress as you like :thumb
- i do wear the viz stuff sometimes - actually these days, only when doing Rider Training. ....
ever since the time a gangster here got shot and the shooter was wearing a hi viz vest..... as a disguise/ to blend in with his surroundings. :blast

Mrs Og has a purple 'H' belt - THAT works. why? i think simply because it's so different that it visually sticks out - catching your attention....
but if we all wore them....

A very sad Thread.

And some very sad people.

You`ll only be seen by those who look.

Hence it matters not one fecking jot what you wear.

All these Dayglo Dereks in their please don`t knock me down gear or daytime lights are just shifting the onus on bike riders to make it their responsibilty to ensure every feckwit sees (and more importantly reacts correctly to seeing) a bike rider rather than hammering home the message that when behind the wheel of a car/truck/van/coach/bus/HGV the driver is a vehicle operator with a great responsibility towards the safety and well being of all other road users.

Those who dropped their mobiles or whatever only did so because they happened to look at the time and thought they may have been about to be done for it.

The feckers know they shouldn`t but don`t give a shite if they think they can get away with it.
Hence all the pissed drivers, uninsured drivers, untaxed drivers, etc etc.

Back to this fecking Hi Viz bollox,if you`re not careful, you`ll end up thinking you`re invincible or visible to all.....and still come a cropper courtesy of the feckwit switching lanes or leaving a junction withing looking.

id be worried about the other 99:mmmm

And that's why I'm not too bothered about not having a high-viz jacket.

If what you wear makes you think differently then you maybe right about being over confident. If you still treat every other driver/rider on the road as a blind twat then it shouldn't.

Being more visible will never stop you getting knocked off by someone who has failed to look at all before pulling out onto a road or changing lanes.

But you can't deny that those who look but don't see you because your all in black against a dark background will be more likely to see lights and a big daft yellow jacket.

I don't wear hi-vis in the day but I leave my lights on. At night I stick a hi-vis vest on. It's worked for me.

But if it's image that you want to portray then stick with your urban camo and black biker gear.

It's a game of percentages :thumb2
