High Fuel Consumption

fuel consumption 1100gs

Nick

I have a 1997 1100gs-re the back firing, this happens to mine from time to time, which i ignore, my bike is standard except for a K&N filter,it has 42k on the clock and i get between 200-220 miles to the tank
It should definitly be doing more mpg-wish i could be more helpful:confused:

Fuel Consumption R1150GS

Just a newbie to these machines (7 months). Riding a 2002 reg GS and when i bought it with 1600 on the clock the fuel consumption was around 170-180 before filling up with about 2 litres in the tank ... i was not impressed, put it down to the bike not having been run in properly. Changed the air filter to a K&N and put Splitfire plugs in (love 'em to bits) and took it to the Black Sea and Romania where at one point in the middle of nowhere and no fuel, doing under 100kph managed to squeeze 260 miles with a litre to spare. Now i am getting a consistent 48 to 50 mpg thats fillup at 200 and about 4 litres left .... Other than the air filter and plugs its bog standard. I do run injector cleaner through it every now and then.

Must admit though ... been riding nearly all my life (along time) and never had as much fun as on the GS....

Think I might give a K&N air filter a go - the current filter doesn't look too bad but must be worth a try. Can anyone suggest the cheapest place to get them?

Cheers

Nick

I wouldn't bother at his stage of the game. Get the bike running properly before making more mods. A different filter isn't going to cure an underlying problem.

There is clearly a problem with the bike. It would apear to be using 20%+ more fuel than it should. My 03 1150 does 45-53mpg depending on how hard I'm caning it and the mix of useage. Possibly, and assuming that 1100's do have them, the oxygen sensor in the exhaust. This feeds info back to the computer which adjusts the mixture accordingly. Black sooty exhaust and plugs is way too rich a mixture.

PM Steptoe and make an appointment. Then take a nice ride up to London get bike sorted and ride home. Compare "there" and "back" fuel consumption.:thumb2

my 1150 does the same consumption, as does my 1100rt, might take a while to contact steppers, he's away on holiday :augie

I was thinking along the same lines-anyone know when he's back off holiday??

I had a look at the plugs today and I have to say they look absolutely spot on-almost identical to the ones shown at the back of a Haynes manaul. Which means the fuel mixture is correct.

I think I will remove the chip before I start hassling Steptoe though.
This is the one that is installed: http://www.bbpower.de

Is there anything I need to know before I start pulling out the motronic unit? Should I disconnect the battery? I know from reading the Haynes manual that this is a little delicate and I don't want to screw things up.

we,ve took the remus off on uggs 1100, its smoother and not runnin as rich, probably down to individual bikes tho????

If the chip removal has no effect then a change of exhaust was gonna be next. I would try it now but the original wasn't included in the sale :( so I'm gonna have to buy one first.

Does the original can fit the Remus pipe? (I believe mine is a full Remus system: Pipes and can)

I fitted Remus headers and use the original can (Had a Remus can but after 400 miles couldn't stand the drone, it's ok for a sunday morning power ranger but for distance no thanks)

I don't see any benefit in replacing the original can - in fact unless you're very lucky , it seems to do nothing but open a can of worms. So a remus is lighter... but does that make much of a difference on such a lardy bike. I think not.

Unless you're desperate to increase luggage capacity - it's a waste of time and money. imho.

On the original cat and silencer I was getting between 170 and 180 miles before reserve light came on, after replacing cat with Y piece but keeping standard silencer, was getting between 160 and 180 miles before light came on - am now running standard cat with stubby exhaust (mailnly so can fit two full size panniers), and am now getting between 180 and 190 miles before reserve light comes on. Have also fitted K&N filter but this did not seem to make great difference to consumption.

They are talking about the 1100. Entirely different set up to the 1150.

A lot of people on this thread mention 'motorway speeds'. What do you mean by that. My old 1150 motored Rockster (with GSA gearbox) would give 50+ mpg at 70, but only 36-38 at my normal cruising speed of 90 odd.

That alone could explain the differences in consumption being mentioned.

been following the thread, iv now put remus back on, hate sound of standard, too bloody quiet..wait for slaggin......................hmmmm

its runin richer than oe pipe , av now adjusted the lil ,hmm box isnt the correct
description but its under the rear mudguard/seat area on the right hand side.

i turned mine in one full turn, from the settin it was on.

i was told this would make it weaker...will do a plug chop then report bak! colour /findings !!!

ugg.
