R80ST, first registered August 1984.....Yippee....40 years old.

Download V112, for change of taxation class to Historic Vehicle, fill this out and head to the post office.

The nice man behind the counter says that the DVLA system that he has just accessed does not recognise the bike as 40 Y.O.

I eventually find a phone number for DVLA and by pressing the right combinations of number choices I get a call back in 15 minues.

The conversation wih the DVLA lady was both helpful and unhelpful in equal amounts.

PO man was correct, DVLA don't consider an 80ST 1st registered in 08/1984 aas 40 Y. O.

DVLA : referred to a document date of manufacture as 31 December 1984.
Me: Imposssible, the bike was registered in 08/84, you have just read that and confirmed it to me.
DVLA: Again, referred to some 'official' document about the date of manufacture.
Me: So, I have to wait until 01 January 2025 to re-register.
DVLA: Oh no, it will have to be 01 April 2025.
Me:????
DVLA: there has to be sufficient time after manufature for the bike to be sold and registered.
Me: But the bike is already manufactured and is already registered.

I finished the conversation with my head hurting, just trying to work out what was actually discussed!

I feel sure that we have crossed this subject before.

So, anybody else come across this and managed to resolve the problem?

With a 'definitive' document from BMW
With a 'definitive' document from the BMW Owners Club.

Anybody got a contact at BMW HQ ?

I agree with wessie - we aren't getting any younger and DVLA are a law unto themselves. It's as if we are trying to take food from their starving children. No logical argument can penetrate their web of irrationality.

So best just wait them out then hit the PO in Apr 2025.

It isn’t a problem. It’s the DVLA rule, always has been since they introduced the “Historic Vehicle” status .. you can register it the following April after it’s turned 40 years old,
All the info is on the DVLA website.

Yep. That’s how they work.

My st was actually built in June or July 1983, but not registered until 1984.
Sadly I know I will have to wait until April next year for the dvla to acknowledge it is “historic”
So just got it MoT’d (for the last time it’ll need it) and will pay the tax til next April.

The DVLA is a law unto itself, and there is no point in trying to argue with them….just accept the “computer says no” attitude the staff have, and it’ll save you getting raise blood pressure.

I did think about getting a certification from BMW to say it was built in 1983, but decided it wasn’t worth paying money to BMW for the certification just for the dvla to say “no”.

Only a few months til my ST will be historic, so I’m happy to wait.

I’ve just been through this to have the manufacturing date and model corrected on the V5 . With an email from the BMW Archive , a supporting letter from the BMW UK Club , a letter from myself and six phone calls I eventually got it sorted after 4 months

Had exactly the same experience last week. MOTd yesterday, 6 months tax paid for and waiting for the rules to change before next April

How they can argue that there's a possibility that the vehicle was manufactured after it was registered is beyond me

V112 is not a change of vehicle tax class form, it's a declaration of vehicle not needing an mot as it's +40 years old. You still have to pay for tax until April next year as you've found out, why the two can't/don't align is a mystery to me.

My katana was registered in June 1981 but was not eligible for historic status until April 1982

I got a confirmation of manufacturing date from BMW and a letter from the BMW club , these were sent off and in less then 2 weeks it was all sorted , i think that they even taxed it for me .

Who at BMW did you contact, and how much was it?
Also, did BMW club charge for the letter?

Wondering if it’s worthwhile for me, or do I just wait….

It was BMW Group Classic
e mail ----- [email protected]
I got the letter back from a Mr Andreas Harz
I think think they charge around 50 euros

Being a member of the BMW club i don't think that they charged me anything , i contacted them (the info who to contact is on there website) and had to send some photographs of the bike showing the VIN number . I can't find the name of the chap at the BMW club but if you contact them first they will guide you through the process , they were very helpfull.
I rember thinking that if it costs me 50 euro for the letter from BMW at least i would have that to keep which would be better then just paying the tax.

Hope this helps Steve

Thanks steve

Think I will just leave it until next April…
Rather than spend £50 to BMW, and possible the same again to BMW club as I’m not a member.
