Just bodged this together with a grinder and a 13/16" plug socket to allow me to get a torque wrench on the nut and still hold the inside torx/allen key to tighten it.

I have one somewhere in the garage that looks like the twin brother to yours... :)

I take it there is a "special" BMW tool to do the job that is either prohibitively expensive or like hens teeth?

Special and Expensive!. Better off looking for hen's teeth... or making your own;)

Nice one! Just finished a front end restoration today, fortunately I managed to "pinch" the taper into the telelever with enough grip to torque it up with just a socket. Could do with one of yours for the nut on top of the shock absorber!
 
Similar to the one needed for the driveshaft needle bearings. I used a deep impact socket.
