Hello
Looking for a comfortable Hotel in this area or possible the North of Portugal .

Any help would be gratefully received .

I have recommended the Ponferrada Plaza before as stayed there on the way to Avila. On the edge of the new town. Has own restaurant and a separate cafe/bar. Garage parking. Short walk to the newer part of town, 15 minute walk to the Ponferrada Templar Castle and old part of the town.
Temple Hotel in Ponferrada has just been recommended in another group I read.
In the old town, by the castle, is the El Castillo, also a decent reputation.
Some great roads north of Ponferrada in Asturias. Also really nice roads to the south especially the one over Puerto de El Morredero to Truchas.

Is Chaves too far outside that area ?

Stayed there many many times , including last year at the Forte de Sao Francisco.

Relax by the pool with a G and T

Or what about the Parador de Santo Estevo which is between Ourense and Ponferrada .

The best parador I’ve stayed in with a stunning location

Stunning restaurant too and not silly money

May not have huevo y patatas fritas con kétchup but there’s always a downside 😜

I can second the Santo Estevo Parador commendation, which sits in the hills above Ourense. Very impressive.

Alternatively, the Parador at Puebla de Sanabria works well, if transiting to PT - IIRC the road south to Braganca, that was in poor shape, has now been upgraded.

If you have never been, do try & include Leon - the Parador Hostal San Marcos, a 16th century pilgrim's hostel, is spectacular.

I’ll confirm El Castillo as a good hotel situated in the square of the old town next to the castle. It has discounted secure underground parking and is surrounded by nice restaurants and bars.

Thank you for the pointers ,I like the look of Parador Santo Estevo or Parador puebla san Sanabria .

My riding buddy Paul is getting to used these Paradors .Thank you once again for the inspiration

. Hotel Ponferrada Plaza.
An easy 190 mile day from Santander through Potes and the Picos and we arrived at the hotel around 16:00 very hot! Very nice rooms and helpful staff. Secure underground parking cost us 9 Euros for all 4 bikes. A quick shower and into the bar for a cold one (or two) staff were super friendly. They serve food from 20:30 which was not only excellent but great value for money. Breakfast was great with a selection of hot and cold items. Cost was around £60 for a Double room inc. Breakfast.

good to hear this place is still a decent stopover on the way to Portugal
