The other half and I have booked heading on our first Euro trip, leaving Folkestone on Tuesday 7th July and returning on the 17th.

We have no set plans other than the Black Forest and avoiding the Tour De France route. We are planning on booking hotels each day but we'd like to make it a bit of a holiday too, not just a bike tour having a couple of nights in a hotel with a pool etc.

Any recommendations for something in the Black Forest and maybe Vosges?

Thanks to those who've posted trip reports and GPX files, they've given some great ideas for routes.

I can recommend the wee town of Thann
We enjoyed that 2 weeks ago, in Vosges at end of Grand Ballon

I think we stayed here

this was one of my favourite places in Alsace. A Logis hotel, superb restaurant. pool and wellness. Sits above Munster and looks across to the Petit Ballon mountain. Has the Logis blue Elegance and Savoureux awards. Evening set menus from 36 euro to 70 euros.

The La Ligne WW1 museum is a few km away.

Stayed here a couple of times. Very nice garage parking and good food.

I have always like the Rustic Charm of Pension Williams and the hosts of said establishment, but small village without a huge amount of food and drink options, stayed in Triberg once, more lively, stayed here, perfectly acceptable;

Stayed here in the Vosges last year;

Got free upgrade to one of the chalet style rooms behind the Hotel, very nice, could park outside the room, although they did have a Garage for the paranoid amongst you. Quite traditional, had a fixed menu meal in the Hotel one night which was good value.

Seemed popular with an older clientelle and some might say it was stuck in the 70s / 80s, but I liked it, pool to cool off in with Hot Tub and Sauna was a bonus, a few other places to eat in the town, but it is not what I would describe as "buzzing", but often on a bike trip I just want a clean room, decent food and a bit of peace.

I know you didn’t ask for recommendations on places to visit, but if glass creations are your bag, the Musee Lalique in Hochberg is incredibly fascinating. A steal at €10 entry.

Thanks for the recommendations all, plenty of options for us to aim for.

At the least I can do, will have a look at writing a trip report as we go.

i know its not strictly in the "vosges" or the "black forest - but in that general area you should consider a stay in Colmar too as it is a stunning town centre.

The Ibis budget is a nice cheap option and very close to the centre - or the Ibis styles is a notch up (and even closer) but still well price and both have an underground car park (you need to email them to reserve a space)

I think I have stayed at Pension WIlliam 9 times now, as well as a decent base for the Black Forest it is a good en-route location on our way to / from the Alps, pre-family would always try and stop for 2 nights and get the free trains to Baden and visit the Spa baths and have a rest from riding.
