How can I get a quieter exhaust?

I have always been a believer of the "standard" bike .. if it comes like that then why change it ? ... then I bought my Triple Black with an Akrapovic ... WOW .... took the baffles out and even more WOW .... I just couldn't go back to being Quiet !!

Ive got the Akraprovic twin Ti muffler "shotgun" system. Out of the box its LOUD and very rippy. The smaller cans seem to retain the higher notes. I had some Xtreme Stainless baffle fitted which helped but it was still rippy. Then one shook loose and fell out so I fitted a cheap dB killer in one can and the less restrictive Xtreme in the other. Noise is now its a good balance of sound and noise level.

I wound it right up the other day in low gears down a motorway cutting wow it sounded nice. Then I checked the speedo - Oops. ;)

It's more noisy (to me) with cases fitted. Longer outlet extension pipes could take the noise beyond the case but wouldn't be too pretty. This might be an option for other systems that are louder with the cases fitted.

The 09 single cam set up is much much quieter than the TC bikes, passengers preferred it.

I'd say the 09 bike is also a better tourer, and performance wise there is nothing in it. Possibly better gearing on the 09 bikes for distance riding, and maybe cheaper to service too.

Shyte

Is there a link between the number of posts attributed to each poster and the shyte they like to post on threads?
Do people post shyte just to boost their little number?
Is there a competition between shyte posters to post the most shyte possible, to enhance their shyte factor numbers?
Discuss.

Why'd you say that then....? Personally, my seat of the pants feeling is that my 2011 Twin Cam is a bit quicker than my 2009 bike was.

Actually I'd rather have high posters on this forum than low posters as the fekkin place would be Fukkin boring if we all post 100 per annum.

Every one a pithy gem of wisdom.

The cheery 'Howdo', the razor wit and general hilarity make it worth the several month wait for the next one:)

It is a bit quicker, which I put down to the gearing. Well it is quicker in some parts of the gearing - in a recent 6th gear roll on while on a continental tour, the TC took off, but was caught and overhauled by the older bike and it wasn't catching it by the time we had to shut off.

I think the 09 bike has taller gearing and it's much quieter, so imho would therefore make the better tourer. I still think the TC handles better (possibly due to the front suspension arm, which looks slightly different) though and I'd prefer it for day to day use.

any update

It's a thought...

I've ordered one of these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BAFFLE-DB...AN-/270704565955?ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:GB:3160

so will report back when it's fitted.

I can't be the only one who prefers a quieter bike!

Arrived nice and quickly so fitted straight away.

Bollocks. I'd say this is actually noisier than the standard Akra baffle. I've emailed the vendor to ask if I can send it back, so we'll see what happens and if I've lost my £20.

So back to square one. There are other db killers out there, even the genwine Akra one for the 04-09 exhaust at £45 :eek

Or maybe it's time to bite the bullet and try and fit an 04-09 silencer. Anyone know how this can be done?

spoke to my local dealers and they said that the 04-09 will not fit different size and it is an easy job to change it so they would have made money out of me so cannot think they woudl say that for the good of it

also contacted a couple of db killer makers and they dont do anything for the GSA so still looking just wondering whether to extend the end of mine so it comes out of the back so not hitting the back of the pannier

Well I had the first decent run on my 2012 TC yesterday and the noise from the exhaust is unacceptable to me without ear plugs, and I dont want to have to wear ear plugs all the time. So what do I do?

I'm reluctant to buy an expensive aftermarket silencer so I think I will investigate what can be done to make the BMW one work as it should.

The silencer even if its quiet enough solves only a fraction of the noise problem. Above 50 mph, wind noise will be by far the biggest issue. On the M-way, with ear plugs which stop the high and medium frequencies, I can hear the exhaust but its not excessive. Without ear plugs I hear nothing but screaming wind noise. I can't hear the exhaust because the din is too great.

I use a Shuberth, C2 (TBH now pretty much worn out) a BMW System 5 and a Shark Hakka. The first two are the "quietest" helmets on the market (RiDE). The latter is a bit more noisy but without ear plugs they all cause toxic noise levels above 50mph. I use a Givi AF-330 screen. Its a bit more noisy than standard but there is MUCH less turbulence at speed.

Without the baffles I found the exhaust too noisy but only in town where it reflected back off buildings. Clearly it was antisocial and unpleasant to use. The baffles solved that problem but they do nothing about wind noise which of course affects me only.

If you want to prove the point put some longer outlets on the exhaust to take the exit behind the number plate. It will considerably reduce noise reaching the rider. But it will do SFA for the other 80% of noise that reaches the rider.

I am sure there is market for properly quiet helmets, perhaps even with active noise suppression but too few riders know any better so nothing gets done about it.

I use a Nolan flip front helmet ( carp - dont buy one) which isnt too bad wind noise wise. Probably no worse than the Schuberth I had previously. And with a large screen and me being only 5'10" I dont find wind noise a great issue. I dont use the bike much for long distance higher speed work anyway, and when I do I use made to measure ear plugs.

Mostly I use the bike for pottering around the back roads of the brecon beacons and I prefer for that not to use ear plugs. And for the occasional rush of blood to the head speed wise, I prefer not to draw attention with a loud exhaust popping and banging on the over run. The exhaust noise on the twin cam is way worse than it was on my previous 08 GS and its not a nice noise like a Harley either. But that of course is a personal view

Talked to a couple of can makers so far and been surprised to learn that they now get a lot of requests for quieter exhausts. Apparently a few manufacturers standard cans arent meeting track day noise limits

didnt you test ride it before you bought it :nenau

get your ear plugs in , you will go deaf eventually regardless of the exhaust :rob

.....Apparently a few manufacturers standard cans arent meeting track day noise limits

Care to tell us which ones?

As a reasonably accurate rule of thumb, track days for motorcycles have a cross-section of limits:

For example:

102db - 105db static test at 0.5 meters

89db - 92db drive-by at 20 meters

You do get the odd track day at 98db static / 88db drive-by.

A standard can will be well within those parameters. For example, my HP2 Sport (not a quiet bike per-se) with its standard can is 93db at static and 80db at drive-by. The HP4, again with its standard exhaust is: 98db at static and 80 on drive-by. Figures that again are well within even the lowest track day's allowable range.

All 'modern' motorcycles' V5 forms record the manufacturers' stated sound level in section U on the inside page, along with the relevant engine speed at which it is measured, as required under EU regulations. The bike will probably have the same data stamped onto its identification plate; all my BMW's do.

Pipe up when you find the standard bikes that fail.

+1:D Glad someone else has noticed this

I'm really not getting this thread at all.

I was out for 80+ miles today on my twin cam GSA , standard exhaust and simple Oxford Products foam ear plugs. Not once did I even notice the exhaust although, to be fair, I was running with my metal (BMW) panniers on.

The issue just has to be earplugs, riding without them is insane.
