How can I get a quieter exhaust?

If you want to fit the Mk 1 or Mk2 muffler/silencer there are two options -

Get a link pipe made to connect the Mk3 flappy valve outlet to exhaust can inlet.

Remove the flappy valve and fit a joining spacer tube with original link pipe. Someone was selling them recently (no time to find the link) but he was MUCH less money than the silly amount Wunderlich are asking.

I know of a brand new Mk2 exhaust system if you want it. Totally unused headers, catalyst and silencer. A Remus Hexacone system was fitted from new so its totally unused. I can be txt'd on o7712I86ooI. :) Having the cat and original headers its as quiet as they get.

This is a thread about how to cut out unneccessary ambient noise
.

So, let's have another go. What's the best way to quieten down the exhaust noise on a 2010 bike? Currently I'm weighing up how to fit a pre 2010 silencer, and whether I need to fit the whole system or not. Any helpful advice gratefully received. :)

I've managed to get hold of an '09 Silencer.......... spoke to BMW here and there's apparently quite a few folks that have the issue and looking for a solution to quieten their pipes down. There are chaps here that have retro-fitted the older silencers with a basic mod and apparently a world of difference!

One of the biggest benefits of a quiet pipe here would be that I can get more access to Game Reserves ........ a trip I did a few weeks ago - I was allowed with a frown to 2 Reserves..... lots of game spotted......... less noisy pipe will be a massive benefit.

As soon as I have my can sorted I'll give you feedback

Thanks - sounds interesting.

I'm pretty happy with the db killer I've now got fitted, but it would be useful to hear what the 'basic mod' is which allows the straight fitting of an earlier silencer.

I was out in Birmingham traffic the other day so didn't use the ear plugs for travelling home. My system has a quiet baffle in one can and more of a token effort in the other**. It barks when wound up but at low throttle its very quiet. In traffic I found the air intake was making more noise than the exhaust. I did the last few miles at normal speeds and proved that ear plugs are a must-have. The exhaust noise was louder (obviously) but drowned out by wind noise and intake growl.

** The other token effort was affected by Wapping's Tesco speedbump sysdrome.

I'm sure thats right bendytoy. My use of the bike involves a lot of slowish ie 30 / 40 mph pottering down narrow lanes when the exhaust noise is far more obtrusive than the wind noise, and if its obtrusive for me, what about people whose houses I pass / pedestrians etc. OK I'm a bit biased here - I live on two biker rat runs and ever weekend we suffer from the noise created by brainless idiots on sports bikes with open pipes. Then the neighbours get up in arms, harrass plod and we get a gatso van for the next few sundays. Occasionally plod run exhaust tests which upsets the riders. Daft - I'd rather ride quietly and not annoy others.

Sure when batting along an A road, wind noise is the main issue and then I use ear plugs.

The brainless sports bike riders P me off as well. Why would 30mph (and so little or no noise) within the limit but pin it hard and howl on the exit be acceptable?

But TBH the BMW (mine anyway) would have to be really working hard to offend all but the deliberately offended. When my brother rode alongside (I was on his Pegaso) the BMW did seem loud. But on a drive by, I was surprised just how muted the noise is.

For ultimate no noise it needs a flap valve on one muffler can. Even with no baffle in that can, it would be very quiet with the valve shut. I guess like the valve used on the Mk3, but on the outlet so much less heat and corrosion/seizure issues.

So to conclude, got a refund on the above, minus £3 the vendor deducted to pay for his P&P to me.

Opted instead for this:

Just fitted and works a treat - still a noticeable rumble and 'good' exhaust note, but definitely quieter than the standard short Akra 2010-12 baffle, and quieter than the standard can.

Hopefully it'll be all I need - looks like I can easily modify it for further noise reduction if necessary.

Are these to fit a standard BMW can and i presume they fit over the end what size would i need

Those are for an Akrapovic Can, not the standard BMW Can.

The TC Akrapovic can with the DB killer fitted is quieter than the standard exhaust, I can't help but feel that the OP bought the wrong bike. Sounds like you need a Honda Crosstourer not this agricultural old air cooled teutonic twin pot.

Did you try it before buying?

Care to tell us which ones?

As a reasonably accurate rule of thumb, track days for motorcycles have a cross-section of limits:

For example:

102db - 105db static test at 0.5 meters

89db - 92db drive-by at 20 meters

You do get the odd track day at 98db static / 88db drive-by.

A standard can will be well within those parameters. For example, my HP2 Sport (not a quiet bike per-se) with its standard can is 93db at static and 80db at drive-by. The HP4, again with its standard exhaust is: 98db at static and 80 on drive-by. Figures that again are well within even the lowest track day's allowable range.

All 'modern' motorcycles' V5 forms record the manufacturers' stated sound level in section U on the inside page, along with the relevant engine speed at which it is measured, as required under EU regulations. The bike will probably have the same data stamped onto its identification plate; all my BMW's do.

Pipe up when you find the standard bikes that fail.

My 2009MY Buell 1125CR is rated at 102dB as standard (stamped on the vin plate)

Possibly something like the flappy valve replacement tubes that have been selling on the forum, are at NN's. The exhausts are the same fittings bar the flap from what I can see, and the same systems for fit 04-09 bikes without any mods. I think the 09 exhausts were the quietest I've ever used on a bike - so retro fitting a 08/09 silencer seems to be the best option for noise control.

I find the Akra great - quieter than the standard can with the baffle in and a deeper sound with it out. It's not as loud as the other pipes though, if that is what you are after - but I would say I notice more of a difference in performance fitting the akra can and removing the flap than I did with the remap - a definite recommended upgrade (but not cheap as chips) - the flap replacement for a tenner is though!.

The Remus Hexacone with baffles is not a noisy pipe. The later bikes with flappy valve will be more noisy when the valve is removed (and when its fully open). The standard Mark 2 exhaust is probably the least noisy and the most restrictive.

The Hondas will be quiet until the exhausts rot. They all do.
