white spirit is what you want!
Most of the the commercially available products I have tried, for tar and chain lube (when I had bikes with chains) had white spirit in them.
It's cheap to buy and comes in handy for cleaning paint brushes

Tried using WD40 last night and it works really well 
, got my Akra can cleaned up and the front header cross over pipe, just gotta do the shaft housing now.
What I wanna know is... how the hell does tar get everywhere, it's not like the roads are so hot they are melting?

Some of the roads here down south were noticeably ripping apart in the heat last week with fresh tar exposed underneath, especially the stuff (poorly) laid last year near my mums place.
