Try to move from my wired speedtouch modem to me new wireless Netgear router. I think that I have now got the router configured OK but when I try to view available network I get the message 'No wireless networks were found in range - make sure the wireless switch on your computer is on'. Many moons ago I had a problem with my laptop when connecting to my then employers LAN. To resolve the support chappie turned the wireless facility on my laptop off - there is a Wi-Fi LED that is no longer lit because of this.

How do I switch the wireless facility on again? Can't find it in control panel anywhere. Perhaps I am blind from looking foor too long.

On my (Dell) laptop you toggle the Wireless via the "Fn"+F2 keys

On my Advent ( ) I press the WiFi button underneath the WiFi led ...

Perhaps on yours it has been disbaled in the Device Manager. OPen the Device manager ( "Start-> Right click on My Computer -> Properties->CLick on "Hardware" tab->Device Manager ), look for Network Adapters and look for a device that has been disabled ( red X over its icon). If your WiFi adapter is disabled, right click on the device and select "Enable".

If you are using Microsoft Vista please competely ignore me, the above and anything I may have implied - I have absolutely no experience of Vista, and wish for things to remain that way :D

Guess you need might to give the collective consciousness some more info here ...

On one of my Dell's there's a hardware switch on the side, most others are like Clive's (lesser model) ;) - they are all different some have switches, some use keystroke combinations.

Look for an aerial like symbol on your keyboard, then failing that look around the chassis for a wireless on/off switch

There might be something in the BIOS as well. You generally get to the BIOS by pushing Esc, F1, F2, F12 or Del, early in the boot process.

Enable it in the BIOS

This is likely to be the fix especially if someone turned it off before.

Just becareful you don't bugger anything else up when changing the BIOS. Take your time and you'll be OK.

Ah, that's what the key does. Just tried it and I get the message. "The Intel PRO/Wireless network is still disabled. Use PROSet/Wireless to enable it".

'scuse ignorance but what does that mean?

BTW it's a Dell Latitude D610.

Thx

Thanks, just tried that. Device Manager thinks that it is enabled.

BTW OS is XP Pro

There is an internal software switch in the Dell that can be turned on and off by the configuration utility, ProSet.

You should be able to download and install this from the Dell website.

I've got a Dell D600, but it's back having the screen swapped at the moment, so I'm afraid that I can't talk you through it.

I found the ProSet utility installed, obviously by the guy who switched the wireless facility off. The laptop is now Wifi enabled again and I can see my (and some of the neighbours and local school) wireless routers. Some setup still required but I'll give it a go and hopefully wont need to start a new thread for the next problem.

Thx for help

Cheers
