The one thing that is proven on most rides to most places with most people is HP, newness and looking like you are the big swinging dick means very little... I would add though that OCD polishing is overrated...

Your spot on JB...they do everything with a lot less effort, they ride lovely, no rattles like my newer GS, plenty fast enough, great riding position, i cant find one bit off tarnish, corrosion, paint defect on my newly accuired 2003 22k miler, its like a brand new bike
