What is the correct way to check the oil level ?

Also, is the oil level supposed to be in the middle of the spyglass when the bike is cold?

Check the oil level when the engine is hot.

Run the engine for 1 minute immediately before checking with the engine off. Ensure that the front wheel is touching the ground.

The bottom of the sightglass is the minimum level, to top of the sightglass is the maximum level. The difference between min and max is 0.4 litres.

People have loads of different ways to check oil....This is mine.

Get engine up to operating temperature, put on center stand on level ground, check sight glass. If its below half when the engine is hot I usually top it up.

When its cold as long as the oil is half way in the sight glass I don't top it up.

I found with mine, with the engine not running, if I put the bike on the side stand then onto the center stand the glass remains full giving a false reading so I don't turn off the engine until it is on the center stand.

As I say thats the way I do it but other people say put it on the side stand first. Bear in mind the Max & Min mark on the sight glass is the circle running about a mill in from the edges...This one is FULL. ;)

.... and if you don't have a centre stand ? (Dakar)

Sit on the bike and ask a friend to have a look.

Or buy a Scarver; it got a dipstick - like cars! :)

Most important: after you've warmed up the engine, let her idle for at least one minute before switching it off and checking the oil level.

I checked with BVM on the correct way and it is...........

When the bike is up to working temp put it onto the centre stand, allow it to run for around 2 min, switch off and check the sight glass, if its in the circle its ok.

After an oil and filter change measure 2.3 litres of oil . Add around 1.8 litres to the empty tank , which fills it to the brim.

Start the engine and after the rattling stops add the other half litre.

You now know you have the correct quantity of oil in the tank.

Go for a decent run to warm up the engine , and pull over on level ground without stopping the engine.Keep the engine ticking over.

Hold the bike as upright as possible and look at the sight glass.

The oil level will be right in the centre , just where it correctly should be.

I havnt found any other method of checking which consistently gives this correct result.

With a dry sump engine the important thing is to have sufficient space in the tank to return the the oil from the sump when the engine is running.

Using this method you can be certain that you have.
