How to connect 2610 straight to battery?

Tired of the current problems with the CANBUS switching off after a 20 seconds or so of starting the engine thus no GPS, I have decided to try and connect the GPS directly to the battery. However, the question is how? Simple question I know but the dealer fitted my Navigator straight into the CANBUS near the front of the bike (where it's supposed to go). Assuming that this is a socket rather than a live and positive wire, am I supposed to split the cable or is there someother type of cable available?
 
Your assumption about the connection being a socket is spot on, it is in fact a rather expensive socket as those who have priced the lead from their dealers will confirm so I woul not think it cost effective to chop the socket off.

If you really want to make a direct connection why not check if you can get a Garmin 2610 lead from one of the suppliers.

You can get a Garmin power and audio lead for the 2610 from GPS Warehouse which will let you connect atraight to the battery.

Just clarify however do you have a 2610 or a BMW Navigator?

Effectively they are the same units but the Nav has it's own cradle and audio output.

Well, after much frustration of GPS and Autocom units cutting I also decided to implement a solution to the whole issue. I fitted Touratech part TPS15 across the battery to power all accessories - this consists of a black box with a number of connections to which you can attach electrical accessories. It also incorperates a relay, which in my case is powered from the front 'parking' light, to switch the battery power.

Used it on a trip round Wales/Snowdonia this w/e and worked a treat - no cutting out of power and it also switches off when the ignition is turned off :) Only problem you might have is where to fit the unit as there is not much space under the seat. However the deign of the seat for 06 bikes appears to be somewhat different - does not have the bar all the way across - which will liberate some space.

No, I chopped off the plug on the Garmin RAM mount I had and put a different connector (just 'cos I had one lying about), and made up a lead which I ran under the tank cover and out under the clocks with the other half of the connector on it.

That way I can disconnect when I want to remove the mount or if the GPS is not being used for a while as I have read a few post on this site re. corrosion setting in on the 'cradle contacts' over time if left permanantly powered up.

How difficult is it to install this? Do you really need to remove fuel tank as per instructions?

I fitted one in the past then removed the lot! Just need to remove the LH side panel and you can squeeze the box in the gap where the rubber breather pipes come out from (the ones that end up by the gear lever). Attached the box with some velcro. I think there's a thread on this somewhere.

No, but then I didn't fit the unit where they suggest (attached to the front of the airbox under the tank- my view was that makes for accessibility issues). Instead I fitted it on a small plate fabricated from aluminium just above the battery. To do this you will also need to make the seat modification as detailed at www.r1200gs.info/misc/seat-trick.html . This mod makes for a significant increase in available space under the seat and means that I can now also fit my autocom unit there as well - it was previously under one of the aluminium tank panels. I guess it took a couple of hours in all, but I'm sure many could do it quicker :)
