Took my GSA to a respected BMW Motorrad dealer yesterday and was told they would not conduct ANY work on it as it has a rear hugger (Puig) and the main supporting bolt may break or come undone. Anyone else heard of this?
Hugger means no work by BMW dealer!

My Puig hugger did break after about 6 years. This was fitted to a R1200RS but I imagine it would be the same design. It wasn't the bolt that broke but one of the vertical braces. I couldn't find the OE bolt so I got Cotswold Motorrad to remove it as part of the service. They had serviced the bike and MOTed it in previous years, although their policy was not to fit non BMW parts so I had fitted it originally.
Had similar a few months back. They still did the work but strongly suggested that I remove the hugger. It’s been there at least 10 years, and it’s still there

My Dealership Told me "It may be a good idea to remove it".... and "You could get billed for extra labour" ........I didn't. However half way North To Nordkapp, it collapsed, I removed it on the side of the road. Never replaced it.
I had a puig hugger arm shear on my Hexhead, I have a different brand( fitted by previous owner)one on my R but check it regularly.

if you were told that, at any other bike shop , i wouldn't believe you , but BMW seem to think it won't hurt them ?
as a service manager , i would put any worries on the invoice , excluding them from liability , and you make the punter sign the invoice , so there is no doubt.
in 30 years of working on bikes , i think i've refused to work on less than 5 .
the one that sticks out the most , was a zephyr 550 , in for chain and sprockets .....but it had no rear brake caliper fitted.
that's not ..... not working .... thats it wasn't there. bloke rode off as i went for a test ride , so i followed him , i let him go when he hit 50 in a 30.
he was a friend of one of the parts men .
parts man came to have a go at me the next day ....his friend ,said that the caliper was there , i called his friend a liar.
When my 17 Reg 1200 went to have drive shaft recall work done, by the Main dealer, in Ireland, I was told when collecting it,⁶ as a non Bmw part i would have to refit my Puig hugger myself, which is what i did when home again.
Interestingly the Service manager said they had a sack full of Huggers which when removed from customers bikes were left with the dealer. ( Issue being i believe is one of the hugger retaining bolts also holds the caliper in position.....
Not everyone is in a position to carry a hugger home at short notice i suppose.

I fitted a Puig on my first ever GSA because of the unfathomable amount of water being sprayed up, in some very strange directions, when riding on wet roads. The hugger cured about 80% of it and what still got flung around was tolerable. I eventually replaced the GSA for another GSA, but never refitted the hugger because of the stories I’d heard. I now have a mudsling and one of those, simple but extremely effective, rear crud catchers (Cymarc product) and together they seem to eliminate most of the spray that is whisked up by the GS/GSAs.
I’d read, and I think it is a valid point, that the GS/GSA just happens to create a strange and turbulent airflow in certain areas. Apparently, it’s this turbulent air that causes the water that gets flung up by the tyres to be fired around in all of these weird and wonderful directions. You wouldn’t think it would you? Not with the GS’s being as aerodynamic as they are!

I loved the Puig one I put on my 2021 GS as soon as I've got it new. 3 months later, found the bracket cracked on few spots just before the ride. I was lucky, it may have broken completely during a ride and lock the rear wheel. Took it off and have never installed the other one.
