Huggered Up

Are we talking hugger or sling here. I know what the thread title says but I thought we'd drifted towards mudsling.

I'm confused!

more hugger than it is slinger to be honest but not with the `all over` coverage of the hugger due to limitations not applicable to plastic moulding. as I said I`m not saying its going to be a hit - far from it - I`m just saying I am doing my best to offer what I can as an alternative to what seems an unacceptable lead time from the big boys. Please remember this when it comes to the final `appreciation & criticism` of my attempt!

A metal hugger/mudsling are you serious?
Can you imagine the noise from stones and gravel on a country road?
Rhetorical questions both, if the punter demands it then go and build it ......

Hi pal, yes, an aluminium hugger/mudslinger to be correct - I can`t emphasise enough that this is just the manic ramblings of a wine soaked fool and without doubt many of us will think its shite, crap, inappropriate, bling, no purpose etc etc etc etc and that's absolutely fine. If the noise of gravel pinging off the hugger/mudsling/frankencrud (that's funny) is the only problem I will be a happy man indeed.

in the meantime I will indulge myself with unfettered access to one of the best laser profiling systems on gods earth (Trumpf TruCoax 2500 - £1/4 million a pop), with only 1 of 6 in the Country I feel that I should continue. Already spent a solid 6 hours on it - to put that into a monetary value I`m kinda guessing that I`ve burnt my way through the thick end of a grand already.

Foolish indeed (f*ck, and then some - humility I do not lack) but the lads demand......................

Nonetheless thanks for the time taken to offer an opinion pal - they are all valuable to me :thumb2

Frankencrud

Right guys, won`t be long before I`ve got a photo of a prototype worth putting on the forum. Before I do, please indulge me on a few points.......

1. I expect to get the shite ripped out of me (this is a radical design - I think - sadly restricted by the fact I can`t do injection moulding) - that's fine I`m a big boy but before you do rip the shite out of me if you can do better then do so (I`ll help you if you need it) otherwise please shut the fuck up (oops sorry that might have come out wrong.....).

2. I expect, possibly, a kindly fellow biker to say stuff like "well done Mark, good effort, thanks for all the time but it has to be moulded and we are going to have to wait ages - nonetheless thanks" - to them I say sorry, I`ve tried my best for you but I`m still here if there is anything else I can do.

3. It WILL NOT meet most tastes - I`d suggest its f*cking useless offroad (as many huggers are) but as a bit of functional bling its as radical as it is somewhat purposeful.

4. And if there is anyone out there happy to stick their neck out and say `nice bit of work, how much?` I`d say thanks and dunno - but whatever the price it will be lower than most else and seemingly much more available.

But anyway, here`s the first prototype - I don`t have a name for it as its not really as all encompassing as a hugger, nor is it a mudsling.

With that said, its made from ali with a stainless bracket which is fitted offset from the `hugger/mudsling/frankencrud` by 13mm so it looks nicer (if that is at all possible). It`s held in place by a cut out which locks the bracket from moving.

With all that said I`m chuffed that some of us think enough of me to ask if I can come up with something - I`ve given it my best shot lads, if in this case its not what you need then no harm done!

Sidney Opera House

I have visions of a layered series of panels looking a bit like the opera house or the armoured plates of a dinosaur. Could look quite remarkable. I for one cannot wait.

Well its a series of panels which follow the shape of the wheel (ie curved) hence the only description I could come up with is `armadillio` - its a result of my only method of being able to `bend` flat material to make it look curved. The slits (or sides of the panel) is actaully the tiniest of slits right through the material (to give me the pliability) but close up when bent to stop shite from getting through - problem is that if I open up the slits to allow further bending to shape it better then it defeats the object. I think with much more time I could do something better but at this time its a starting point and the feedback, good or bad, will tell me if I have to spend more time on it

and I can see why you are thinking this - its a good idea and might work

Not bad for 1st prototype seeing as I only started at the weekend

Well, here`s the first one - next one will be `layered` - hard to descibe but GSWhizz has been the closest. The layers will start low at the front and go up in 2mm steps and will follow the profile of the tyre now that I think I have got the right lasering process sorted.

Radical? I don`t think anyone has attempted to laser and curve aluminium as I`m hoping to do - lucky sods all take the easy (or intelligent) way out with plastic moulding!

Now, I'm a big fan of solar panels - I've got 16 of them on my roof but I don't think those ones will generate much electricity when they're hidden under the rear subframe like that.....:augie

Next step

Guys, here`s the next step - its just to prove the shape thats all but I think I am getting nearer the `hugger` shape don`t you think?

I do feel that I will have to Tig it up (which isn`t the end of the world) but I`m starting to get quite pleased witht he radical design,

Can you see what I mean by `layered` and `Armadillo-like`

What do we think? Load of arse? Too radical to be any good? Or `Radical-R-Us` ????

I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder and there will be amny people who don`t like this but I`m starting to like the way this is going...............
