Ive done the last 2 HUMM events, the 2008 area West of La Molina is a better off road option.....IMHO
The 2009 was a bit too much tarmac for our little group that included a couple of 230cc trailies on out and out nobblies.
Its a great introduction to Pyreneese trail riding and demonstrates just what is available.
The plus side of the ferry is you can go on an off roader but its very time consuming.... the road route down is pretty easy but boring, we took a Transit van with a caravan in tow last year, about 16hrs driving in total.... you could take less but i suggest you would be knackered doing it....
For what its worth.... if you havent been before then enter...great intro.... if you have been before and know the ropes then why bother paying to ride whats on the map.... that said.... I may go again but sort my own accomodation out again...

I did it last year for the first time. Rode there and back from London and did the event on my 1200GSA for a personal iron-butt challenge. Its quite satisfying sinking a whole GSA tank from full without stopping. A £10 bit of sheepskin works wonders for your butt.

The riding is simply stunning.

A 1200 is fine; plenty of challenging riding. Some would say a smaller bike will be more fun but depends where your head is and how your stamina is! Horse - having ridden with you at the Hog Raost - you'll be fine.

The Hotel is nice (La Molina hotel, in La Molina). There are other cheaper hotels a short walk away. Camping is a few miles away bit of a steep walk.

I'll be doing it again in 2010 but this time will drive down in Motorhome and will trailer bike down and stay in the area for a cpl of weeks with the missus n sprog thats due in April.

i did the 2009 event went portsmouth-caen overnight 4x4 and trailer, 2 of us driving, and got down to the hotel in a day, this years price for the same run is 536 (for two) , havent decided whether or not to go again this year but if i do i fancy the plymouth/portsmouth santander route and making it more of a riding trip and that works out at 553 for 1.

Heres a google map showing the official HUMM Hotel (HG La Molina at La Molina), and the campsite, which is quite a hike on a hill from the hotel. Zoom in on Satellite view and the hotel marker is right by the front door. There are other cheaper hotels a short walk from the main hotel.

Rode to the 2008 HUMM on my ccm604. Debating whether I do the same again this year on my Xch. Ferries from Plymouth are £470 via Santander, £160 via Roscoff. I'm not going to spen £300 riding through France and back on the Xch. I might even throw in a few days off road through the Pyrenees as well.

Anybody else?

which ferries are you on? No reason why I couldn't ride up to poole and join you, providing the days match up. The other option would be to meet up on the other side.

I have some GPS routes for traversing the Pyrenees that would be fun but not sure about anything else. I have downloaded a route that goes from le harve to near niort but I haven't checked it out yet. If I can find out any more about it, we could join the route part way down. I also have some routes downloaded for Saint Nazaire area.

My preferred plan would be to get the overnight ferry from Plymouth to Roscoff which gets in around 6, giving a full day to get a good distance down the road on the other side. Looking at the dates, the cheapest ferry is Sunday night meaning a long road ride on Monday, a shorter ride Tuesday to arrive at lunchtime, or a looong day on monday and sleep in on tuesday. The other overnight ferry is Friday night which gives sat, sun, mon, tue am to get there and set up camp. I could work in some off road on the way there with that timescale.

Overnight ferries home are currently sat or mon, mon is cheaper but I haven't compared all the prices yet.

i could do any, but would prefer the friday ferry as its more time off roading . have you already booked your place on the event.
i want to do it but it depends if anyone else is up for it and what level they would like to enter at.

If you are on an xchallenge like me that would put us in the big bike class. This is not a problem unless you are after silverware, as the checkpoints are scored by their distance from the start point. The furthest points, which involve more road riding, score higher. Personally I would prefer to hit the trails rather than tarmac. With us both on the same bike that shouldn't be a problem.

I haven't booked anything yet, just been thining about it for the past couple of days. I was offered a pass to go away and you don't turn those down in case they don't get repeated.

Are you OK for a Plymouth ferry crossing? It normally takes me 2 hours to Bristol, but I am 1/2 hour past Plymouth so figure on 1 1/12 hours past the severn bridge.

friday night ferry has no cabins or reclining seats left so it would be a case of finding a quiet corner to stretch out. Coming back on Saturday cabins and seats are available. Booking reclining seats would make it £203 each. Returning on Monday night would be £24 cheaper.

Poole - cherbourg is not much cheaper despite being a quicker crossing. It also has the disadvantage of being in the middle of the day so you don't get a full day riding either side of the ferry.
