Happy New Year...

At last, a sunny day, and what a day, clear blue sky, no clouds, no salt on the roads, just a little damp here and there, damn near perfect.

So I thought I should take the Guzzi out for a spin, it is the first time I have had a chance to ride it since I bought the old thing, and got trailered home with the oil leak! time to see if all my work has paid off. So I opened the garage door, and there it stood in the sunlight of a new year...

So I pushed it into a new day, aand it fired right up, and soon settled into a pleasant tickover, we were ready to go. But where should we go on this fine day, well the Phoenix at Phoenix Green that's where. So I made a couple of calls, to see who was about, and off I set, on quiet empty roads, heading for North Hampshire, and a coffee at Hartley Wintney...

So having had a nice hot coffee, I made my way the short distance up the road to Phoenix Green, and soon found somewhere to park up, before going off to see what was about...

Well it was soon time to be heading for home, so I fired up the bike, and headed for the lanes, some of these were a bit dodgy following all the rain of lat, with lots of mud on the corners, But I was soon back home, and the bike ran pretty good, the gear change has improved with the new clutch cable, although I still have a little work to do there, but alas, my left foot was again covered in oil, but not this time from the breather assembly, this time from the head, so it looks as though I need to do the head gaskets and o-rings.

I must admit I am usually on the wrong side of a trend, but maybe this time I got lucky. but I have no intention of selling it so in reality it makes no difference.

Just another Sunday morning...

Sunday morning was upon me, so I thought what should I do with it? I know, I shall drag the Guzzi from its slumbers, and have a pootle about in the direction of the Barge, and maybe look into booking a few places for a camping weekend later in the year.

So I walked down to my lockup, and dragged the old girl out, she was a bit sluggish to start, the cold had got to the battery, but it did start. Next I had to find a garage as both tyres were pretty soft, so once that was sorted, and after a blast round the block, to make sure all was well, I headed out.

The first thing I needed to do though was find a roadside coffee hut, and grab a bacon roll and coffee, well that wasn't to hard to sort out and I was soon getting on the outside of both...

while enjoying the coffee, a nice little Fiat 500 pulled up..

Coffee and roll now done I once more headed out, to do my task for the day, and having done that I returned home to give the Guzzi and my R80 a good wash, to clear the lingering road salt that blows about at this time of the year...

Once that was done, I adjusted up the gear linkage assembly on the Guzzi before dropping it back to the lockup.

I am so looking forward to warmer days...

Cheap and nasty, the chrome is not very durable, lights are bright though. I do want to change them though

Just a short bimble on my Guzzi...
Just to warm it up so I could change the oils, and find the stripped threads left by a previous owner, that now need sorting out. Luckily they were only on a level screw, and not a drain plug.

I now have a new oil leak, after curing all the others, this time from the distributer, I guess there is an oil seal or o-ring at the base where it goes into the block.

the level screw going is a common problem. i've seen a lot with over sized/wrong threaded/bodged in with ptfe tape b olts.

the dissy has a gasket. at least it should come out with the engine in the frame. i seem to recall they don't on tontis.

while you're there, check the dynamo bracket (11) to crankcase bolts. almost never see one that's got two left.
even if they are ok, fabricate a strap to weld to the back of the bracket and fix to the dissy base bolt. this works if you can't get the original stud out too

The gasket at the base of the distributor is a 'f&%Ker' for leaking! Its a paper gasket..Well on the Tonti's anyway, not sure about the loop frames. The frame needs to be lifted off the engine to get to it. Definitely a design oversight by Moto Guzzi in my opinion. Smear a bit of instant gasket on both sides of the paper gasket. Worked on mine anyway.. Lovely bike!!

not heard of that one. not taken a distributor apart either, but i guess there's an o ring in there somewhere.

i'm wondering if you have a lot of crankcase pressure? got oil coming out of the engine breather?

Do any of you have the tool for removing the fork seal holder, that I could borrow, I have the fork legs out, I have new seals, but I can't get the chrome holders off the sliders
