I have just sold a ZX12R and in the midst of selling my Gixxer thou.
I still look at the thou and think ooohh you are lovely and you go like a dream, but then I look at the weather, the state of the roads and think of all the places I cannot go, and the GSA wins everytime.
Not to mention how bloody uncomfortable it is inless you are getting into 3 figures and enjoying knee down action and how often does that happen

In 2007 I sold my 2005 Fireblade and bought a 2007 (pre owned) R1200GS Adventure.

I can understand your reticence as I was a little like that at the time, but in all honesty I have never regretted it. If someone was to give me my Blade back and let me keep the Adventure too I would sell the Blade again as I would never feel the need to ride it.

Nothing can match the amazing acceleration of a modern sports bike but 'in the real world' and as an all round bike the GS is plenty.

Plus.............at my age (55) it is so nice to get off after riding for a couple of hours and not have a sore arse, knackered wrists, neck and knees.

Just do it.

Oh I no how your feeling, this time last year I was in the same dilemma , had a ZZR1400 and had done 15k miles from new ,totaly loved it . BUT was regulary touring with GSs and they were so much easier to live with when camping. And my so called mates were trying to talk me into swapping............then it happened, one morning in early sept a mate said do you want to swap bikes for the day, which we did. and as they say the rest is history, picked up my GS Dec 1st and I've already done 2500 miles added loads of extras to make it all mine and absalutly no regrets.

Ok, thanks for all the comments. Deep down I know I will be getting a gs it's just a matter of letting go of sports bikes. At a push I could keep the blade and buy a 08 gs may take a look at the weekend.

How many miles a year do you do enjoying the Blade? If you get a GS you'll be doin 3 times the miles (three times the fun).

I know had a RSV mille, got a GS, the Mille stayed in the shed most of the time, until the realisation that it was sat there gathering dust and costing petrol money for the GS so it went!

Solution 1 :- keep the Blade, get a GS....... see above
Solution 2 :- Sell the blade , get a GS....... you can always get another Blade! (or other exotic/erotic sportster to satisfy )

I did 3 euro tours on the ZZR1400 and if I had a time machine I would go back and do them all on a GS instead.

Since buying the GS in mid october I have ridden it on local roads almost as much as i would during an entire summer on the ZZR, at the time I bought the GS I would have loved to have kept both, but I now know if I had the ZZR would just be gathering dust.

I think this is a one way transformation, I am glad I got the ZZR as it was the pinacle of fast things, and I now know the GS is better on 95% of roads, I cannot see I will ever go back, well maybe a classic, would love an 851 SP2 (first of 888 motors)

Multistrada 1200 ?

I've had 3 'blades in a row and now onto a VFR1200, but previous BMW's (1100S, 1150GS and 1200S) are the bikes I miss.

My VFR is only 4 months old, but I know it's only a matter of time before I'm back on a GS.

I'll add my two penneth worth. I had a similar dilemma last year. I had the K6 gixxer thou, but at 6'4" and getting older the pain outweighed the fun. I'd always fancied the 1200GS Adventure and taken one out for a spin when they were first launched. At the time the suspension was too soft and wallowy and I didn't buy one, I bought a 2005 GS instead. However, I'd heard that they'd sorted the suspension out with the 2008 model (I think), and that they were releasing a new updated version with the DOHC and a couple of extra horses. I fell in love with it within 30 mins, bought one fully loaded, and still love it a year on.
Going from a sportsbike to a GS/GSA is a big step as you're going from one extreme to another, and it can be quite a shock. It takes a while to get used to the lack of power and acceleration, and initially I think you might be a tad disappointed with it. However, the more you ride it and judge it on it's own merits rather than comparing it to a sportsbike (which you inevitably will at first) the GS/GSA really gets under your skin and as people say it's really fun. My Gixxer gave me much much more of an adrenaline rush, but the GSA is more fun and a giggle.
Truth be told though, I wish that I still had the Gixxer as well (and could find it comfortable) as I really miss it. But I wouldn't be willing to give the GSA up for one If I was buying now though I'd certainly be taking the new Multistrada out for a test ride to compare to the GS.
I know there's a lot of members on here that prefer the 1150 to the 1200 as they're generally considered to be more robust, and more comfortable, but I wonder if, coming from a sportsbike, you would find it too lacking in terms of performance. I found the 2005 GS just a little too underpowered, so would assume the 1150 would be even more underpowered, and heavier. The new DOHC with 10 extra horses compared to the 2005 model makes the world of difference imo. I'm sure I'm going to get shot down now, but these are just my opinions.

My Ducati is going at the end of the week. A nice 2006 1200GS is waiting for me at the shop! One 10 mile test ride and I know I'll never own another sports bike again!!

Be different

The GS is an escape from what the magazines tell you what THEY think you should be riding this year. Truth is, the majority of riders (me included) would not be able to tell the difference between a 02 and 08 fireblade if you went for a ride blindfolded.
There's shit loads of reasons to ride a bike. Some like to drive slowly through a village and pretend they are Rossi. You know, full leathers, latest bike. Similar to the Harley rider, who wants to find a coffee shop to look at his bike, and watch people watching his bike......because harleys can't go round bends.
And then there's the guy on the GS.... Tall, Over weight, definitly ugly, under powered, not the rider... The bike! (and thats compared to sports bikes..., apples and oranges..) but you can't stop riding!!
Huge personality, character, and shit loads of .. "Who gives a f#ck what you think.... I'm havin' a great time!"
He's the one laughing out load in his helmet! No one else can hear him but he doesn't care!!!!
Get the GS and try to be happy

30 hours and counting to collecting my first GS!! I (Not that I'm counting!)

I'm 40 years old and haven't felt like this about collecting a bike since I collected my Honda SS50 aged 16!!! I think it says a lot about the possibilites the GS offers the rider, like a full day in the saddle without having to shake the pins & needles out my hands at 5 minute intervals.
