iabs failure

I've been waiting for this and now it's happened. 2004 1150 gsa with the servo abs brakes. Twice at the weekend I had a moment when both dash lights lit up, fast flashing and I lost breaking power on the front. The system reset itself and all seemed ok again. I'm thinking I'm losing servo assistance on the front. I'd rather not strip the system out if it's repairable. Could it be a sensor or circuit problem that I can solve or it the modulator failing? I have bled the whole system in the past and the bike's done 36k miles. Help!
 
Happen to me about 8 years ago, the unit then cost over £1400, that's correct no typo!! Luckily for me BMW supplied the pump for free and I paid the labour change, about £300 ish. My advice is to REMOVE IT...... sorry.
 
It's worth check filters in the abs unit and clean them.

What are the blue and white tubes running up into metal part? I know, I'm gonna have to have a proper look in the tech section!

Very useful info. When I get back from my trip I'll check mine (no time now and no obvious reason to start fiddling and fluid was changed some weeks back).

Ah thanks for all that. I've cleaned the abs sensor on the front wheel and I'll check the brake light bulb as I've read that can cause problems. It seems unlikely that the battery would cause a failure whilst riding, but I think it's worth replacing anyway. The servo motors both run when the ignition's on and the brakes are applied but I notice that if I push hard on the rear lever when stationary the servo stops whining when the brakes are fully on whereas the front servo keeps running however hard the front brake is applied. Any idea's? I'll test ride it tomorrow. Could the system revert to residual braking for anything but a major modulator failure, doesn't seem a very safe system if so. I really don't want to strip it out if its a minor repairable fault. Thanks again
 
Just had mine go at 42k, same year model and make, Bath Road Motorcycles charged me £350 to remove it. I was happy to pay really given I have the technical skills of a ham fisted chimp

That's perfectly normal and how it should operate.

get someone to plug in and read the diagnostics with a GS911. Pointless to keep guessing what could be wrong.
 
I've had the fault codes read but not much detailed explanation from a main dealer. Maybe someone out there can shed a bit more light on it. 4 codes came up. 0045F6 brake fluid level. Checked all the levels and there appears to be no problem there. The other 3 codes are all described as an ABS internal fault. they are 004213, 004313 and 004413. If the ABS brain is fried I'll replace it with a 2nd hand one and see how it goes but if its the pump then I'll strip the lot out. Could partially blocked filters be causing the problems. It goes to residual braking fairly often now, every ride, but resets itself straight away. Looking forward to your words of wisdom!
 
Just get in there and clean the filters. It's the only way to eliminate them as a cause. And do a fluid change at the same time (asuming you haven't done that already).

I too have servo brakes so always interested in these stories in case it happens mine. Let us know how you get on. :thumb2

Where are checking the fluid levels ? The only fluid level warnings are for the servo unit itself, not the master cylinders .... So check the levels on servo/abs modulator ..... You can't just replace the abs brain as the unit is all one piece ... And don't waste your time cleaning the filters as it's not those ..
 
Yes I checked the fluid levels on the servo/modulator and the master cylinders, all ok. Cant I remove the brain off the side of the modulator, held on with 4 tamper proof star drive fixings. I see Sherlocks have one for sale on their salvage site. It looks like it's independant of the modulator body, I was hoping that if I have to strip the modulator out I'd leave the brain plugged in to run the brake lights, remove the blue relay running the pump and remove the warning light bulb from the dash. Is that too hopeful?

Sure that not ECU ?
 
Yes sure. The ECU sits in front of the modulator, separatly. The brain is on the RHS end of the modulator with the multi pin plug on top feeding it.
