I got the 1100 for £7999 from Bracken, my friend got a Basic.

I am glad I went for the 1100. It was a great bike but bet the Basic is worth more now?

No. The 2-Valve Boxer staggered-on long after it should have been laid to (an honourable) rest.

Owning and running an old one is keeping a part of Boxer history alive but to buy a brand-new one today would be perverse.

I think that the same applies to anything that has been bettered by its successor (of course whether what comes after being better is a subjective judgement. We always have to make allowances for the likes of Proff and us 1150 owners ;)).

Only if I could have better riding kit than a foul-smelling Belstaff waxed jacket, falconry-style gauntlets, and Derri boots. :rob

I think we could say the same about the underpowered K75 :augie My K75lasted all of 7 miles before expiring  Horses for courses etc :thumb2 If I had the readies available, yes, I would buy a Basic....still an exciting bike and asking this in the airhead section will get about a 99% Delmonti yes, if we could afford one.:) I'd also buy a new 1100GS as well...then again, I still own an airhead and an 1100 :bounce1

Good find johnny :thumb2

I'd say the same thing if someone suggested buying a brand-new K75 today. Exactly the same applies: the K75 went out of production for a reason. I wouldn't buy a new one of them today either.

I guess with what I've replaced on my Dakar project bike,I'm going to have essentially a brand spanking new Airhead.Much better than one of those rubbish 1200's..............................................:beerjug::D

Yes, without a doubt.....!

Tried to get a new 1100GS up here and they'd sold the 'one' they had......Ended up with a two year old K1100LTSE instead and it was four years before I was able to sctratch my GS itch. I had an R80ST as a 'stopgap' for a bit which satisfied the craving for a while at least.

Then again riding a 'new' airhead today would be a bit like snogging that girl you always fancied at school......but now she's fifty, eighteen stone and puts her teeth in a glass at night.....!

Best just to keep the memories.

What did happen to Brackens.. I had a bike shop about a mile up the road from them in 2005 and they were really going strong then... even offered to help out when we got into trouble. i heard recently that they are no more which is a shame as they were a really good bunch

They were part bin specials to get gullible people to buy the remaining stock before BMW moved on :blagblah

Strangely the subframe was a one off and is more substantial than the one fitted to the g/s and ST. Before I bought one I assumed it was just an early frame with the brackets moved.

Paul (wilf) is till there, servicing bikes under his own name. Johnny is living in wales. Known them both very well since 1986. Went on Johns stag night when he married Patty sheck ( of paris dakar fame) and to his 40th birthday party :augie

My son also worked there for a short time, and i worked there a few times (when nick plumb worked there) if they were short of staff .

Not a petulant over-reaction from a Basic owner!! Not a petulant over-reaction from a Basic owner!! Not a petulant over-reaction from a Basic owner!! -->

Ah, well, for me it was a fantastic and unexpected last chance to buy a new airhead that I actually liked the look of (while I was working in Germany). By the time I was solvent enough to buy one new, the air head range had become a little overdressed and in some cases a bit tarty (think the 'classic' range of '95, the official last airheads).

I kept my Basic in Germany for five years before I moved on and had it serviced regularly by the (very good) dealer who would 'hire' me a bike for 24 hours (in fact all I had to do was pay for the fuel). The idea being that your own bike would be dropped off with a hot engine before closing, so that the hot oil could be dropped and allowed to cool down overnight before the service work the following day.

The 'hire' bikes included demo R850Rs, R1100GSs and R1100Ss, even an F650GS PD one time (couldn't really warm to the last one). I used to take each bike on my curvy 70 mile test circuit in the Odenwald (a bit like the Black Forest but north of the river Neckar). I like the telelever system a lot, but at no time did I regret a) buying the Basic nor b) feel the urge to replace it when I got back onto it the following day.

Hi thanks for the update.

If you ever speak to to John say "Pete from Club Moto says hi"

That's my my old "City Bikes" courier uniform you're dissing, nobody kept you waiting in reception for long when you smelled like a wet Labrador :D

No dissing from me...My Belstaff was a present from my mum when I was 19...and I was 42 when the pic was taken.
