il Bastardo - Ducati Monster big traillie

There are some thanks and acknowledgements due.

Very, VERY many thanks to everyone involved in bringing this project into fruition.

Inspiration - As mentioned previously, I have been around bikes for a very long time now, and I have seen a lot of different designs, but when I saw a photo of the Duc Cutters' Terra Mostro, I thought "yes, that silhouette, that's how I think a bike should look. That's just right".

Engineering - calculations - the grand plan - Gavin Robertson was the first person to say yes, we can do this. He calculated the steering head angle, the bearing sizes, the ride height, the stresses on the steering head, the torque demands on the crank case-mounted swing arm linkage and the solution to cope with that..... He remained involved throughout the build and was also able to dip into his virtual parts bin (thank you, too, Marc from Hull) and produce various bits from 20-years-obsolete Italian part-bin-specials such as Cagiva Elefants... As mentioned previously, you can see more of his mastery at www.gavin944888.com

Then, once we had a modified chassis, with an engine fitted, all looking a bit scruffy - in fact to be truthful distinctly second hand - the project moved into the hands of our own Tunneruk. CT sorted out a wealth of details - things that might have looked ok but really needed plating, coating, painting, fettling - things that needed re-routing, things that needed re-buying, wires that needed lengthening, hoses that needed shortening etc etc etc.

Anyway.... what started as a meeting at Thurrock services with Gavin in November last year, became a seed of an idea, evolved into some kind of commitment with the purchase of a yellow Monster on the 15th January of this year, and thereafter became a long list of tasks / questions / solutions bringing us to wherever we are today.

I have said before that specials are exceptionally subjective.

But - from my perspective, I'd have to say that if Carlsberg made middle-weight, good-looking, factory-quality and brilliant sounding trail bikes...........

Great build guys, very inspirational. Thanks for taking the time to document the build. I've really enjoyed following the thread.

looking forward to the proses part 2 with anticipation.

My closing comments

This has been a brilliant project to build, there have been few a complications to work around but none of which presented too much of a problem with a bit of lateral thinking. All in all I think it turned out an absolutely cracking bike.
It's been a pleasure working with Paul, we've known each other for a few years now and I'm glad to say that I think we'll still be friends for many years in the future (Always a risk when you mix business with friendship) :beerjug:

I'll add my last batch of photos here .....

Cheers for all the comments -

Regards, CT :thumb

An absolutely stunning build, a credit to all involved in it. That's the kind of dedication to engineering & detail that I love to see. I've only come across this thread literally this morning but I'll definitely be following the next part.

That looks scrumcelishious.

Lovely job.

Any chance of a video with sound ?

Steve

Gorgeous bike, excellent idea and fantastic attention to detail. Best build I've seen for some time. Now never mind all that loveliness , let's hear the bloody thing running on a ride past and a bit of gopro off road.:D

Excellent job one and all:cool::bow:bow:thumby:

Here's the Vid, sadly the white balance is all yellow because the GoPro got confused by the fluorescent tubes in my workshop and the sunlight coming through the door.

There is a few small video clips that I shot using Paul's phone when he came to pick her up. Maybe one of them is good enough to post up here?

Beautiful looking bike, love the attention to detail on it.

Inspirational stuff, a really bloody good job. :thumb2

The Feb 2016 edition of "Motorcycle Sport & Leisure" arrived today.

There is an interesting seven-page article on this project entitled "Build your Perfect Bike".

Its a very good testimonial for Chris Tunbridge - our pal "Tunneruk" :thumb :thumb.

Good one fellas ;).

Bob.
