Never though this could be so hard - just to play a few games . . . :blast

Jumped through multiple hoops and the long and short is that I can't install a 32 bit version of Windows 7 on a 64 bit MacPro.

I've acquired a x64 version of Win7 and all appeared to go swimmingly well until it tried to reboot. whereupon I just get a black screen with a flashing underline cursor.

Do I just give up at this point?

Which Mac Pro?

If it's the current one, then only Windows 8 64-bit is supported.

If it's the previous one, then Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit are both supported. So your scenario is a bit puzzling.

Did you download the correct version of BootCamp?

Have a look here

Its a MacPro 5,1. A 32 bit version of Windows 7 installs fine, but the setup.exe created on the bootcamp support usb stick will only run on a 64 bit Windows 7

Do you know what version of BootCamp you're using? You need to use 4.x for 32-bit Windows, and 5.x for 64-bit Windows.

Its 5.1.2, which is the problem, but other versions are not available to download.
Hence the attempt to install an x64 version of Win7.

Does it have to be bare-metal windows? - i've got a 32bit w7 Parallels VM for the odd work stuff that insists on running only on there.

My only use for Windows is to run the occasional game.
My experience of Parallels/VMWare suggests that even with significant iron, they won't run games.

Forgot to say thanks for that.

Thanks.

However, although I've got windows up and running the hoops that have to be jumped through to make things works are simply not worth the effort just to get a few games working. Repeated errors of the form:
You computer was unable to start - attmepting repairs
String not found
Microsoft Visual C++ runtime Library
Assertion Failed
and bizarre psychedelic colours in games.

Maybe I'm spoiled by working with a Mac almost all the time. Why can't it just work? Don't tell me, I already know.
