Hi Folks

I've just been online getting quotes as I'd like some opinions on whether they're reasonable or not.

Given the following:

1. I've just moved to Canary Wharf. My car insurance has gone up 200 pounds so clearly east London is considered high risk.

2. I have no NCB as my last riding was in another country and my insurer there is now defunct.

On Oonyack's 1150GSA or an 06 1200GSA, the quotes are coming in at around 550 fully comp at the cheap end of the market, ie. Kwikfit insurance, but this requires a hefty £500 excess.

eBike want around 1100 fully comp, and this includes overseas cover and other bikes (potentially breakdown cover as well).

BMW insurance is about £710. Not certain on the excess conditions as it doesn't state as such on the initial quote process. I'm thinking this would be a good option if it includes the european cover and breakdown insurance.

FTR, I am 30, clean driving history and the bike will be kept in secure underground garage with a good 'certified' chain and locked to a pillar.

Thoughts?

I have renewed with AA insurance
1 yr no claims bonus
Discount available for being an associate member of the IAM (i.e. prior to passing the test)

2008 1200GS

£150.00 approx
Similar quote as you with BMW insurance, although unbelievably the policys still underwritten by the same underwriters (red star I think)

Wait, are you saying that from BMW quoted at ~£700 (which is what I pay) you got a quote for ~£150 from the AA  ???

try adrian flux mine was £184 fully comp with no ncb as mine is on me harley:augie

gocompare.com also have a motorcycle insurance section, might be worth giving them a try.:thumb2

Eggsacktly.

I used the MCN compare thingy and the AA came up best.
I couldn't believe it so I rang them direct and as I stated the premiun is £150 and like for like with the old BMW quote.

The BMW quote had gone up from my first year from £500!!!!!

But still the same underwriters at the head of the insurance policy.

I'm just down the road near city airport, and was in the same situation when I bought my GS two years ago. Best I could find was BMW insurance at around £700 fully comp, on a bike valued at 10K kept in my garden secured with a ground anchor and two almax chains.

I've used BMW and Ebike and find them to be the best. Saying that, I've never had to make a claim, so never really tested them. My advice would be (considering I work for an insurance company), don't go with bottom line premium quote. Factor it in, but also go by people's experience with the company when dealing with a claim.

And I can confirm, east London is a shite hold and one of the highest insurance area's you'll find in the country. Head down to beckton district park to see how many burnt out bikes and cars there are to see why!

Well, thanks for the info, I will definitely do that when the time comes to renew(sadly only in November).

Since my insurance is up for renewal shortly I did an online quote with BMW last night.....£186 fully comp :thumb2

[snip] I've used BMW and Ebike and find them to be the best.[snip]
I have several bikes with eBike but my 1150GS was insured with Carole Nash.

The primary reason for that was eBike won't under any circumstances cover outside the EU and they only provide RTA insurance for Romania and Bulgaria. If you're considering taking your bike further afield and you're with eBike you'll have to source your own insurance for other countries which can prove expensive.

Thanks for all the feedback thus far gents.

Tried MCN comparo and the cheapest there was £1200 (the highest £7k :D)

Adrian Flux online quoted in the 700 range. Might be worth a phone call to see if it could be lowered.

If all else fails, I'll do a year on an Africa Twin or Transalp 700 or something to build up the NCB. The dream bike will have to wait.

bloody hell, im paying 160 fully comp for 2 bikes!!! bennetts, chav insurance but still.

I also used the MCN search thingy and AA came in at £97 but I added legal cover, that put it up to £125
But then again I am 41 and 8 yrs NCB and staying in a relatively safe area.

If I was you, run a couple of search engines and make sure you get all the details correct, and spend an afternoon on the phone you never know you might end up with a great deal.

Yep, you're right. I'd missed that:

Isle of Man
Channel Islands
Andorra
Croatia
Gibraltar
Iceland
Liechtenstein
Norway
Switzerland

are included and they're not in the EU.

OK, I'll change my warning to "They fully cover most of the EU and the list of countries above, provide RTA cover in Romania and Bulgaria but won't, or wouldn't when we asked last year, extend the cover anywhere else not even for a fee.

I don't know how far down into Croatia you're going but remember it is split into two and you have to cross a narrow strip of Bosnia to get to the bottom half. When we went no-one was checking insurance at that particular border so we risked it and didn't buy Bosnian insurance until we made a longer trip into Bosnia.
