I'm looking at upgrading to an iphone, due to coverage issues at home I'll have to go with Voda. The only drawback I can see is the capped 1gb of internet access (o2 is unlimited) Does anyone know how much data they download on their iphone at present? I'd class my usage as just above average and concerned that 1gig aint gonna be enough!
I realise at home i can use Wifi so coverage may not seem an issue but txt doesnt work on wifi and sad as it seems I do use txt a lot at home so this rules out o2 etc.

I don't think texts count as "internet use" :nenau - you should have a number of texts included in your tarriff and/or a charge per text over and above that.

Internet use will be anything like the GPS or radio/tv streaming apps or interactive gaming etc.

1gb doesn't sound too bad to me.

Orange are also doing the iPhone now so that may be a better option?

Texts don't count towards your allowance (MMS messages do though)

I rarely use 1GB of network data a month on my iPhone :thumb

Thanks chaps, Voda is the only network that has coverage at my place so rules out o2, Orange and Tesco. I meant I need to use txt at home so need a signal as it wont work using the wiFi (text that is), i didnt word it very well.
Think I'll go with the Voda option then and keep an eye on the amount of data, found this App that logs it so should com in handy :D

The iPhone logs data use in Settings - General - Usage. I've used 276 mb in the last month.

I've had my iphone on Voda for 6 months and consider myself a heavy user, still not getting near the limit, which never ceases to amaze me. I wouldn't be worried unless you're going to be downloading lots of movies and music.

Thanks Mr_M :thumb2
Sounds good to me, all I will be doing is general browsing, keeping an eye on footall scores and possibly loging on to this site (if I can) so hopefully won't be using too much.
Does the iphone have a radio?
I assume you have an unlocked iphone on a general VF tariff? I thought they had only just bought them out for general use?

With that useage you'll have no issues.

The iphone doesn't have a radio but there are several apps that stream radio stations from around the world, I use wunderadio. Yes by phone is a 3g I bought secondhand and is jailbroken, I pay £15/month for unlimited data, texts and 600 mins, worked out cheaper doing that than buying an iphone and contract, plus I could stay with Vodafone who I've been with for a while and really like the service.

Buz, don't forget you can use Wifi on the iPhone too, so if you have a broadband at home and use wireless within the house its a 2 min job to set it so that it uses that for internet connection when you are at home. Failing that when you are out and about you can always scout out the coffee shops that have free wifi to get your email fix if you really need it.

I went with O2 so get the unlimited data use, but when it runs out I'll move to pay-as-you-go because in reality I don't use much over the 3G phone connection as I thought. I guess it gets used most for checking emails on the go, surfing when in a shop/etc checking out & comparing prices, and the GPS of course that needs to download your current map for where you are.

And its a cracking phone. I'm a bit of a techy geek and its something I wouldn't be without now because it makes all the stuff you want at your fintertips so damn easy.

Have fun.

bear in mind that you can't download files over 10mb over the phone network*, so all big files have to be done via wi-fi anyway.

*on O2 anyway.

Thanks everyone for all your feedback...:thumb2
Well, i've just ordered the 3Gs 16gb on VF, delivery about the 14th (thats when they are launching it)
After chatting to the Spotty Sales Lad the mobiles that are on an uncapped data one average about 250MB per month, so i'm probably concerned about nothing really.
Most of the time i'll be on WiFi but intend using it when SWMBO is shopping and i'm doing the carrying and propping the doorway up, plus many othertimes ....

Time to start looking at what apps to load :D
