I just got my new 1250 today.

I fitted Helibars at my mates across the road as soon as I got it as I had to do the same to my 1200 just to get it through my gate.

However I was mildly pissed to find it still wouldn’t go through. The engine crash bars were too wide.

I was mildly pissed off that I had to end up taking the gate off.

I’m sure from memory the 1200 had loads of room engine wise. It never occurred to me that I’d have trouble with the new one.

Is the 1250 that much wider or could it have been the BMW crash bars versus aftermarket ones that I has on the 1200.

The 1200GS is 1200mm wide.
The 1250GS is 1250mm wide.

That's why they're designated as such.

I just made that up.

Sorry.

Not sorry.

:P

the cylinders heads on the 1250 are longer, so with BMW bars on will be wider than the 1200, had the same issue as you OP. sorted it tough, took the gate off in the end

This episode will become known as Gategate. :beerjug:

I mean there would be no reason to check before you buy it.

I was unaware of this, But after researching it, its 10mm more for the 1250. (980 = 1200 / 990 = 1250)

It’s more in reality with the difference crash bars than 10 mm but I’ve figured out why.

The black bars were the 1200 and probably aftermarket.

The silver ones were BMW’s own and are quite a bit wider

I’ll be honest and say it never even occurred to me. My 1200 had gone to the bike yard in the sky before I ordered the 1250 so I never actually saw them side by side. In the same way I didn’t realise new GS’s don’t come with the top plate for Vario luggage like my s/h 1200 did.

You know what they say about assume :blast

I took the numbers directly from BMW, specs for both bikes. Not sure if that's including Crash bars or not ?

Yes the 10mm is probably correct for a naked bike.

I’m almost certain it’s the different bars.

If I’d known I’d have put Machineart x heads on instead.

There’s a silver lining tho. I can get the hand guards on the Helibars through the new gate
as there wasn’t even enough clearance for them and I just had to have bare bars.

I can’t put the standard bars back on as it’s just a fraction too tight.

Couldn’t you have just taken a couple of “chunks” out of the gate posts at the crash bars height with a saw and wiggled it through? :nenau Would only need an inch or two either side shirley?:nenau
You could’ve left the gate on then. :thumb2

It was a thought at the time but my immediate thought was just to get the bike into my shed so I just whipped the gate off.

Now I’ve seen how much different it makes, just riding straight in and out, because I used to still have to wiggle the 1200 through I’m reluctant to go back.

Yes I could probably have cut out bits but getting a new gate will only need to be done once and that’s it.

When I look at the pile of stuff I’ve bought to fit on the new bike what’s another few hundred quid :tears:

Perhpas, instead of a gate, you could put up colourful ribbon doorway, like you used to see at the butchers in the 70's.

Riding through that would make quite an entrance.
