Is my final drive about to fail?

Further to bendy's option 2 idea.
The same breaker in the Netherlands has a very clean FD for up to 2008, but I believe they're compatible, which would cost you about £250 delivered.
I ordered mine on the Sunday, was dispatched on the Monday and was with me in Downpatrick by Wednesday lunchtime.
Get Mikeyboy to rebuild your own at his leisure and then sell the other one when you get back.
Let me know if you need the details of the breaker.

My Yamaha division 900 with the same final drive gearbox as a Honda CX 500 (a bike with 50% of the power and less weight) had done 75K when I sold it. Its now well over 100K and the FD has had only oil changes. The 900 is a capable bike but very much build down to a price.

The big difference is a twin spar swing arm, wheel running on its own bearings and a big fat cush drive between wheel and FD splines.

It had no paralever malarkey but still had next to no jacking effect (that afflicts the old airheads). That was down to the rising rate shock linkage and shock damping.

It also had cheap front forks with bad brake dive, cheap rear shock and quick rot frame paint especially if it got stone chipped

Hi Betty, I'm in France at the moment watching the MotoGP but I've got a complete FD at home in Cornwall off my '11 GSA with 12K miles on it.
Mine was swapped for a new one after I got knocked off by a drunk driver and the FD got very slightly scratched. I was so incensed at getting knocked off mid-morning by a drunk driver that I insisted that EVERY part of my bike that was even slightly scratched got replaced. My local Motorrad dealer duly obliged. The FD is in perfect working order and I'll send it to you via courier on Tuesday when I get back if you're interested. You can borrow it for free as long as you pay for shipping, giving you time to get yours fixed whilst you're away. PM me if interested (I'll be at Le Mans all day tomorrow but will reply to any messages Sunday evening).
Just another option if you need it. Cheers, Steve.

Steve, pm'd you.

Often I'm blown away by the generous offers some have made on here in the past.
But I never thought I'd be on the receiving end of an offer like this.

My trip is a big deal as I retired 3 weeks ago, still have a young family and the trip is my treat to myself. I've been worried it might not happen after my discovery.

Mikeyboy is still the man to put my bike right. So with the help of SteveM and mikeyboy I think my problem may well be solved :aidan

Just reading this. I hope it gets sorted as it clearly means a lot to you. And a fantastic response from all the bods. Let us know how it turns out....:thumb2

Stevie what about Herbie Lysk over at Ballygowan?

Jay
Don't know him but the name is familiar.

I've already arranged the pickup of Steve's unit on Tuesday

This week is gonna be unbelievably crap.... Wifey asked me to accompany her to the 'Civil Hearing' which starts tomorrow, if you know what I mean?

Yes, bike needs sorted, but I have to manage it in the background whilst putting her first. Specially as she gave me a 3 week pass for next weeks.

Well if you can't trust a retired police officer with a good sense of humour and a fantastic avatar, who can you trust?????

If your wife is respondent to a civil hearing she has my full commiserations. It has to be the most wasteful and ineffective way to get anything done. But it keeps huge numbers of flunkies in well paid jobs.

I, and I am sure countless others, are AGOG to know how this ends. The thread is OOZING goodwill, and is a joy to behold. We ALL hope for a happy ending!

I'm in fear of this becoming a ride report which I promise it won't, but For those interested I will give an update of today's developments.

I paid a visit to my local Dealer and bought some more 75W 90 gear oil, a rubber seal and as they told me on Saturday, they still don't stock the crush washer for the fill plug as no-one ever asked for them before.... (apart from me last weekend)

But I sourced another one from a local motor factors to keep Steve's unit right.

Parcelforce 24 hour service did exactly as it said on the tin. Steve's final drive unit arrived today in time to save the day.

Bike was booked in with a local independent bike mechanic at 6pm to have him swap the units over at his leisure.

5.10pm I receive a text message from Brittany Ferries telling me this.....

So to set the scene, this ferry runs from England to Spain or France during the week and sails Cork to France for one crossing a week to fill it's timetable. So, if no ferry on Saturday, it's 7 days until the next one and as for me getting a cabin again.......

Because I'm in Northern Ireland, the phone call is International. 40 minutes on hold then I'm cut off. Really impressed. I tried ringing Brittany Ferries in UK, as it is included in my free minutes with my mobile. 40 minutes on hold and I gave up, so I cut them off.

Bike eventually delivered to the mechanic and I will get it back tomorrow.
