is there a replacement for the tool section under the seat on an 1150?

i,m also playing with the rear rack but im looking at dumping it completely in favour of a much sleaker/slimline sort of cover.its in its early stages but i,m getting there slowly:rolleyes:

Tool box

Glad to see I was correct I did wtiet a long and witty reply to mr S but it never came out so gave up as Vern says there aint much room any way so after much checking I dident bother either lot of work for very little result.

How about a few more photos of that tool box? Wouldn't mind seeing a full bike shot from the side.

Made the fiberglass box up today, of course once it was done I realised there was a better way to do it. I'll finish it tomorrow and post up photos, I think it's gonna be quite sweet.

Right, finished the box up today so here's a photo diary of what I did.

Took out the tool tray and lined the space with several layers of cling film

I used some cardboard to keep the edges from going too deep into the recess which would mean it wouldn't come out afterwards.

IMG_0190.jpg

Cut some fiberglass sheeting to size

IMG_0191.jpg

test fitted it

IMG_0192.jpg

and layed in some resin.

IMG_0193.jpg

Once it was set I took it out and removed the cling film

IMG_0194.jpg

Trimmed the edges with a coping saw and test fitted it

IMG_0196.jpg

Of course it was around this time that I realised that I wouldn't be able to put the original top on it, so I sat and thought for a bit and decided to cut out the ends of the old tool box and glass those in to the current box.

IMG_0197.jpg

This also gave me the chance to cut out a couple of bits that didn't fit as well as I wanted them to.

IMG_0198.jpg

Relined with more cling film and fitted the box ends where I wanted them

IMG_0199.jpg

and then laid in more fiberglass and resined it into place.

IMG_0200.jpg

The ends were only glassed in on one side and the backs were a bit messy.

IMG_0201.jpg

IMG_0202.jpg

So I decided to trim the fiberglass all the way back to where it met the plastic

IMG_0203.jpg

IMG_0204.jpg

and then fiberglass over the top of the plastic to strengthen it giving a much stronger piece.

Once that was done it was just a case of trimming the edges and sanding them and the other sharp bits smooth.

IMG_0210.jpg

and then putting some duct tape over the edges for protection.

IMG_0211.jpg

And it's done.

Now to fit the intercom which is what this was all about in the first place. I wanted somewhere dry to put the control box, ipod and eventually the two way radio. This box should take care of all of that, keeping the electronics protected and out of the weather.

IMG_0214.jpg

Once all that's done the lid goes back on and it looks just the way it did before.

I've never done fiberglass moulding like this before, only ever patched boats. It was a fun learning experience and has given me exactly what I wanted for a tenner's worth of fiberglass and something that is custom to my bike.

Cheers,

Justin.

Thats a neat job Justin, you ought to have said about the Glass and resin, I have a load in the garage. I dont think it will give me the space I need I reckon I will stick with giving up a corner of a pannier to the bits and pieces.

Maybe....

Brill job:clap

How long before touracrap have one on the market then:augie

Mr_Magicfingers should fill his creation with plaster of paris to create a mould pass it on to you and you make them instead of Touratech ripping of customers with exterinate prices.....I will have one....:D

PS> With a % to mr_magicfingers for his intial hard work and an excellent job...:D

Clean job, but has anyone else used the space under the riders seat for storing a small pack. I stapled a cross shaped web of old goggles elastic to my seat pan and can store a pack15cmx10cmx5cm under there.
Oh, I did space the seat up by 15 - 20mm for comfort value and discovered this space.

Started making my own 'Autocom' compartment today. Slightly different method though as I cut out the bottom of the tool tray and fibre glassed around it. Still to trim it down though but so far so good!

I've been thinking about getting a small box made that would fit in front of the number plate under the rack. maybe dump the plastic.

I don't want a top box, I always thought that they put the weight too high and when I read on Advrider about the guy whose back was broken by the top box when he was rear ended by a car that was the decider.

Nice work with the GRP guys.

Vern do you sell these lids:-

Does the rear seat still fit as normal?

With one of those I'd simply put the tools into a waterproof wrap and dump the tray altogether. I'm sick of the rattling over rough roads of which we have plenty up here.

Don't think he does as I asked before. Touratech and RuggedRoads make them though.

Have a look at the Pelican 1170 case http://www.pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1170 if you are looking for something small and waterproof to mount behind the number plate. I have the case and been trying to figure out where to mount it. I'll take a photo later of it beside the plate so you get an idea of size if you want.

That'd be great essjay, thanks.

Both the TT and RRoads covers still locate in the tool tray plastic slots.
