Is this normal !

I have the solution ..... Get rid of the. LC and go back to the TC .... I did !!

Smooth gearbox , no clutch drag or cluncking lol!

Price must be going up with the ditching of LC's ..... Might sell mine if I get the right offer ! :D

Collected my bike today after having a Brand new engine fitted this being the latest and greatest !! heavy flywheel and I've done 40 miles home journey today after collecting it, on my route home i notice engaging 1st gear loud clonk being wip-lash from the drive and bike jerks forward (my mate following me in the car also can hear me engaging 1st gear) going up the box 2 - 3 clonking, not nice.

Once home, bike on centre stand or paddock stand, clutch in engage 1st gear, rear wheel spins with the clutch in and you cannot stop this by hand or foot on tyre.

Also tried engine off, clutch in, 1st gear selected and start bike with clutch in, wheel spins exactly the same, i also tried holding the wheel whilst starting the bike and the pull on the wheel is a lot.

FFS this engine feels worse than the one they took out and that was perfect apart from it leaked water.

CLUTCH DRAG ! I thought the reason they put the heavy flywheel is to eliminate all this .

I have to say the TC is a good looking bike...,

The only reason I upgraded and I suspect others is the LC has a bit more power, I always felt the TC needed 15 to 20 horses more. Not saying TC is underpowered it is just there at times I want to feel a rush of power. Another reason is when doing motorway work at 75 to 85 mph the air cooled engine sounded in pain. The LC is better on motorway thrashes.

So if BMW only upgraded the engine and left the gearbox alone in the TC it would be the best bike on the planet imho.

Nope. It's not job done at all.
Please refer to the other world famous thread on this subject where there are thousands of comments and opinions.

My replacement 2014 gearbox is silky smooth, no clunking. No crashing. Neutral is now available as opposed to being impossible.

No "technique" required or adjusting the way I have to change gear.

The 2013 piece of junk I had first however was just that. Ding dong knows all this, he's experienced it too.
I tested multiple bikes like engineer too, and rode friends gs's. They were all great, apart from my 2013 model.

Engineer definitely has valid points. However this isn't cut and dry, this isn't "I'm right and you are wrong", there are definitely bikes with shite clutches and boxes. With the vast quantity these bikes sell clearly there are ones with issues, and they are in the minority.

What ding dong has put up with is not acceptable surely anyone can see this? He knows how to ride and change gear Ffs.

Just Google the clutch or gearbox issue. In most languages there are people finding the same problems.

The s thou gearbox is different. That machine has its own issues, but the ones I've ridden also clunk into first, the f800s / s / gs I've owned were perfect but none of this is relevant for this gs issue...

Very well said :clap

Mine is a 2014 built bike (4th GS) and the gearchange was crunching very badly at high revs. Certain people with good bikes (the i know what i like and i like what i bloody well say types) would have had you believe its 'technique'.

I've been biking 27 years and this was an awful gear-change.

Dealer test rode bike and confirmed the gearchange was to quote their words 'bad'.

Bike was left with dealer for a week .....result was a new clutch pack fitted and final drive adjustments. Result ....150 miles on the bike yesterday and no more crunching gears. The gearbox is now perfect. Mega happy with the result.

! :D

I did go back to a twin cam last month as i needed a bike to go away on whilst my toilet was having the engine, however on my return i sold the twin cam to my mate....BIGGEST MISTAKE selling the twin cam .

Now I'm on the look out for a triple black .

..

I could understand if i had just past my test last wk, but telling someone they need to change the technique is taking the piss (no offence) i have as of today had a friend come round and ride my bike i never mentioned the gearbox until he brought the bike back and his words, it goes well but what the fook is wrong with the gearbox !

Now as individuals we all expect and accept different things, what is good for one may not be for another, I've rode my share of bikes to know the gearbox on my bike is shit and spoils the riding to a point, i cannot be bothered to take it out because every gear change is different it clonks and you can feel it drag in slow traffic changing down with the clutch in, the shift assist is somewhat different with every gear change ie theres to much lag and sometimes its ok because the change is matched to the engine revs due to the lag, but BMW insist its characteristics of the new engine, so in essence they removed my 2014 engine that had a perfect gearbox and gave me a crock of shit in return, Thanks BWW.

Every bike seems to be different (these words from the horses mouth) but this should not be the case.

What are you thinking would be a successful outcome to all this ?

I dont think theres going to be one, however i feel under the circumstances of my experiences with this particular model (gs wc) since march 2013 until now (thats 2 bikes, first one tried to kill me and the second one is on its second engine) BMW should Not bury there heads in the sand, and at least try to fix it, either clutch pack ! Gearbox ! Or just buy the bike back and ill walk and will gladly not return to the water cooled engine until its been fixed completely and i feel that is some yrs away, alternative I'd be happy with a credit to purchase a different BMW bike, so as you can this is not personal, i do like the brand.

I strongly feel BMW need to up the game and look after there existing customers, its the existing ones that return yr after yr and buy new models.

I couldn't agree with you more.
For the last 25yrs my main bike has always been a BMW and often, though not always, my second bike was also a BMW.
I was one of those people that retuned religiously to the bmw dealer and bought my next bike.I always found them fairly transparent and happy to sort any problems.
Whilst the product was fairly basic it always appeared to be pretty well put together using quality components and did what it said on the tin.

I now feel that they have possibly taken a different direction and different approach. My belief is that whilst still turning out a reasonable product some corners have been cut and they are releasing bikes to the open market that have not been fully developed, they are still prepared to offer what is most probably unparralled customer support, but sadly there are some occassions when the fault cannot be rectified, and if you are unlucky enough to be in this situation it doesn't matter how much support you are offered if your bike is not going to be fixed it's not a lot of use to you.

I believe that the dealers, whilst on the surface still appear to be very helpful, are much less transparent than they used to be and that bmw have a tighter hold on them, in regard to what they tell you, than in the past.

Very sad really because the GS WC had the makings of a phenomenal bike it was just released to early. whilst the vast majority of punters will be happy with their new gs's there are, many, many, including me who are not, and whilst on the surface they appeared to be trying to sort it out it was clear they did not have the know how or ability to do so.

It will be interesting to see in 10yrs time which bike has the greater value .....2012 R1200g,s twin cam...or....2015 R1200gs water cooled.

I understand that all manufacturers have their problems but it would appear more and more that buying a BMW is becoming a bit of a lottery.

All of the above is my personal opinion based on what I have seen, heard and experienced.

For now I've gone down another route but I sincerely hope BMW get their act together and listen to what their customers want rather than what the media believe they want.

I agree. If there hadn't have been a three month fuck up with my clocks, I would'nt be riding an 1190R. And I can tell yer this for free .... I ain't coming back .... :D

have the new 64 plate r1200gsa and kept my 2011 gsa tc, it might be the keeper because I really dislike quite a few points on the new bike

That's just it, the bike is mass produced but you have to wait 3 months and they cost £800 and secured with one c-clip thats removed within seconds, tis abit like Chaining the bike up with the biggest and baddest chain but only using a chocolate padlock !

The factory sat nav has far greater security protection than the speedo clocks ...

Looks like BMW have done you a favour and as you say, your gearbox on the ktm is better ...

So, are you going to be totally honest about your KTM and tell us when you have a problem with it and if it goes back to the dealer for anything ?

The twin-cam is a great bike (I had one) but it is a bit soft compared to the LC.

Hey ... absolutely!! I have no allegiance (never have had) to any make or model of bike, and have never really understood why people get so precious about 'their' bike!

If the KTM has problems I'll be the first to let you know!! (the horn for starters is a genuine disgrace and a three week old duckling makes more noise ... :P)

The reality is this - a few people have problems (fair enough) but the vast majority do not and the new GS LC is the best selling GS ever - make what you will of the facts.

Don't forget to buy some chain lube and something to clean it with !
:augie

Lube .... 2 min job once a week

Clean .... Parafin and paint brush 10 min job when you can be arsed ....
