I've had enough. But going to waste some more money on Garmin.

It links during initial setup unless you explicitly tell it to fuck off, then it is impossible to unlink it, does not matter if you do not have the app, or even if you try a restore, the bastards have deliberately made it impossible to undo - as stated the only way to stop the bastards spying on you is ot use the hidden diagnostic menu.
I think it’s not that complicated.

Unlink the XT from Bluetooth on your phone, there are maybe 2-3 Bluetooth connections so delete them all. Also delete any Bluetooth connections to the phone on the XT.

Uninstall the Drive app on your phone.
Then download the drive app again and go through set up but be very careful to skip the step that links it to Explore.

That’s from memory but should be more or less correct.

From memory, that is exactly what I did.

I most certainly have never seen nor used or suffered from Garmin Explore, whatever that is. There again, my two XT’s have behaved all but perfectly, too.

Then, apart from “colour coding” the tracks the easiest way is to toggle them on/off manually.

That’s what I always do (and reason why I “disconnected” my XT years ago).

Indeed, so.

I guess I had simply toggled all the tracks off. Thereby avoiding not knowing which track was which. Rather like turning off auto-recalculate, I find it easy enough (most of the time) to navigate myself back onto a route * or use the XT (and earlier devices) pretty good ability to ‘skip points’ automatically or be prompted to do so.

* Using the device’s screen pretty much like a conventional paper map. Yes, sometimes I have found myself on or under a bridge, when I thought I’d be at a crossroads but, that’s Adventure (with a capital A) biking for you.

I’m just reaquainting myself with the Montana. Things to know:

1) No point in Bluetoothing it to a phone, except if you use the Inreach and then the messenger app is quite good. Do not pair it to Explore. The Connect app is a shite intrusive fitness app that’s no use and Connect iq is just a few shite apps you don’t need.
2) use a usb cable from your device to send a gpx file
3) ignore the Course function
4) it doesn’t have the weird RUT behaviour
5) track and waypoint management is much better than either MRA or the XT
6) The Profile function is incredibly useful. Set a profile for example for riding roads only in Europe with Metric units, CN maps only, routing preferences, dashboard etc and switch to that with 1 button when you get off the ferry
7) its very customisable

Thanks for clarifying the postcode search. That would have been my main "don't buy" point.
I found a few threads online as well that explained that with CN you get the full six digit search.

I discovered the issue with Connect when using my GPSMap 62s – I initially linked it to the Connect app, but it meddled data. I use Connect app with my cycle computer and another fit-fat-ness related device, works ok for those, but I really do not want to crossover anything with my GPS/travel data :D

Created a few eBay alerts for 710i and powered cradle. I can wait...

How long have I had my Garmin 390 -- a century ???🤔😂.
Anyway reading through this thread, still pursuing which Nav way to jump in a modern world, I picked up the dialogue on annoying re-routing --- after going off route.
I spotted the "Turn off Automatic Re-route" suggestion.
DOH.
My Zumo 390 has been on Automatic re-route since Day 1 --- had to be the best option, right?

Finally dawned on me that switching ReRouting Off would avoid me hitting Recalculate multiple times when I decided to wander off route. !!😄😄😄.

Thanks guys.🥳
