Me and the other half have just returned from a road trip in Japan and as there doesn't seem to be much on the forum regarding this amazing country I thought I would share our experience.
We hired a car to get around but I met an American gent touring on a BMW he had hired, along with a British mate on a 1250 GS, so touring japan on 2 wheels is pretty straight forward.
You need an international Driving Permit (Code 1949) which costs around £5.50 and lasts 12 months. These were available from the Post Office until 31st March this year but now you can visit here to sort the permit: https://www.gov.uk/driving-abroad/international-driving-permit
I was under the impression Japan is really expensive, but the yen is really weak at the moment and one of the most surprising things for me is how cheap Japan is, petrol 90p/lt, We were finding good 3 start hotels for £50/£60 a night, meals for under £20 for two, car hire £500 for 2 weeks, wine from £2 bottle, branded whisky £12 bottle, McDonalds meal deal less than £5. Of course you can spend a lot more if you want, like anywhere. Accommodation was more expensive in the tourist areas and the road tolls can add up: we spent £240 for 16 days and 2200 miles, make sure you get the automated toll payment card when you collect a car and pay when you return it. Motorcycles pay 80% of the car toll apparently. Parking is often difficult and expensive. We always booked hotels online as we went that had access to parking.
Japan drives on the left, roads are generally very good and the standard of driving is among the best I have seen.
The Japanese are mostly very respectful, modest, polite and generally helpful. We were amazed how well everything worked and the lack of litter and graffiti.
It's a 14hr flight and after landing at HND, Tokyo is the biggest city in the world with 37.5 million inhabitants, it seemed a bit much for a starter so we headed straight to the Mount Fuji/lakes area. the first day it rained and Mount Fuji was hidden behind cloud but on the second day the sun came out along with the mountain, we also drove to Shiraito falls.
We chose to visit in the blossom high season which made the country even more magical and exotic.

Lovely country .
Did you fly back from HND over Aleuthians/Alaska , taking 15 hours ?

After Mount Fuji, we followed a blossom trail up to Toyama, Joetsu, Nigata and back south to Sendai. We did drive on to the Noto peninsula from Toyama without realising the area was hit by a big earthquake in January and suffered serious damage. I found it ironic that even the temporary repaired roads damaged by the quake were in better condition than the roads around North Devon.
We intended to head north to the snow roads like the D103 which has 10m high snow either side before I found out the roads were still closed so we headed south to Kyoto and its surrounds which was full of other tourists.
After Kyoto we hit Tokyo for a couple of days which was OK but not what we visited Japan for.
All in all, one of the most interesting countries I have had the privilege to visit. Blossom season was definitely the icing on the cake. We would like to visit again in the fall but the trouble is I am 64" along a 75" tape and there are a lot of other places I would like to see in the world, so it's a definite maybe we will get back to Japan.
Fascinating country, fascinating people and culture. Get there if you have the chance.

Yes, 15 hrs on the worst BA flight with the worst cabin crew I have experienced, followed by 6hrs on a National Express back to North Devon and the worst jet lag ever.

I can imagine , that long being squashed in down the back , assuming you were !
Should have messaged me for a tad more leg room . Can’t change the cabin crew though

It's a long story but we had to spend an extra a day in Tokyo and when we did get on, the CSD generously gave our half decent seats to a young couple with a baby and we were relegated to the back and very poor service.
Such is life: Worse things happen at sea.

Just booked our trip for March / April 2025! Yes, a long way off but am travelling (upon recommendation from Greg Masters) with ANA in business class so to get a decent price we booked a year in advance. Cant wait. Will probably reach out to you for some tips and where to go. We should be in time for Cherry blossom so whilst Tokyo is good for maybe a day or 2 we want to get out into the countryside. Hot springs, food, Visit to Hiroshima and Kyoto by bullet train. So much to do but we will be there for 3 weeks!

This is on my list to go to as well!

You will have a great time. The blossom season starts in the south in March and heads north with the weather until May so you should be able to see it somewhere.
Japan Rail pass is a good way to travel apparently: https://www.jrailpass.com/the-japan...MtVgj3CCjshKirZF_pP4WNsGpgDdUr50aAjnMEALw_wcB Three weeks travel on trains, buses, ferries and airport transfer is $688 at the moment.
We also purchased a Ubigi esim for our phone: $16 and 10GB of data for our trip, easy to use and seemed to work everywhere.

Nice trip report, thanks for posting. Do you still have your place you did up in France?

I sold the place in France Mike, 4 weeks before Brexit. It was a cracking place but I spent all my holiday time travelling over and maintaining the house and garden. It was an adventure but not one I would repeat with hindsight. Now I can spend the money on trips like this instead :)

Great write up and info, seems a bit of a bargain at the mo 👍🏻. The Japanese are amazing people, I so wish the UK was as disciplined, gracious, polite and respectful as they are.
