Well the time came around and last Wednesday we linked up at Leicester Forest East services to do our 6-7 days in France 🇫🇷

We were doing the night boat out of Portsmouth to Caen - even meeting mid afternoon, we had plenty of time to kill

Taking the A34 we stopped at the Carpenters Arms at Burghclere (well worth a stop off and they have rooms too) for a 6pm supper

Suitably nourished we set off for Pompey in the approaching darkness - noting the efficiency of the Tenere’s great lights

Quick splash and dash of expensive e10 at Sutton Scottney Shell and we were on our way !

Arriving at Port at about 8.30pm we checked in and went for a warm drink in the terminal

The boat was late docking, so there was a delay and no rush

We got chatting to some other interesting chaps from Wales who were on a R90s and a R80 and were on their way to Colombres Classic Ralky in Spain’s Picos & were later joined by another old fella on a Mk 2 Guzzi Le Mans - once loaded we met up with in the bar, for more story telling …..Don’t you just love motorcyclists ❤️

Finally we got on ….!!

So we were off the boat at 7am and thrust into the darkness of Ouistreham

It was cold at 8-10c and there was a heavy dew on the fields and mists in the valley bottoms as we headed inland

We made our way along the route and stopped for breakfast at a bar in St Pierre en Auge, a lovely old market town with some magnificent buildings

Is that a Tubless converted Tenere Johnny ?

Fortified with cafe au lait and croissants-we continued along a route that Mark had pre planned but our Garmin XT’s we having none of it, so luckily we could resort to Beeline, which worked impeccably

Bloody Garmin

We ambled in a south easterly direction towards Argentan and stopped for lunch and spotted a decent Relais and spotted this covert 1250 GSA in an alleyway
The owner came over and recommended it and we talked bikes for a while
Food on the Menu du Jour was delicious and the homemade rice pudding was amazing

We crossed the mighty Loire at Blois and the roads were long and straight but pretty boring and tiring by then

So we sacked off the route and went faster route to St Aignan for our first night’s accommodation

Mark has a canny knack for searching out unusual and quirky lodgings

This one didn’t disappoint

At 16c monastery and abbey in times gone by

We had a massive gite and town was lovely

We even found some Samuel Smiths (from Yorkshire) in a beer & wine cave bar

Sam Smiths does not travel well !

To be fair it doesn't trade well 5 yards from the Brewery
