Two days in report...
Bike... R1100GS standard exhaust, K&N (previous owners fit)... CO pot...
Experience... 4th 11GS with approx. 100k miles on oilheads in general... many different bikes ridden as a BM salesman...
I bough the bike a couple of months ago and this has been my smoothest and best running 11 owned so far... Its a 99 and has the twin throttle cables... It was set up a bit "off" when bought and 10 mins on a driveway adjusting cables, setting the tickover and balance by ear later + 10 mins with a multimeter setting the TPS, all was pretty good...
The bike felt pretty good, was still occasionally jumpy at low revs and a little woolly in the 2.5 to 4 k rev range but flew after that... I wanted better slow running, a bit smoother and better response but having had professionally chipped/dynoed and Remused bikes before I fancied a quieter life... The standard can is far better than many people want to believe for all round running...
I bought a stage 4 chip from John, fitted it in 1/2 hour on Sunday, and have ridden it 100 miles + in the last couple of days...
It has made a major difference to the slow running and I have given it a good test running slowly with glitch free operation and it now rides slowly like a carb'ed bike which was always the Motronic 2.2 11's worst scenario...
2 to 4 k is far more responsive and even though 11's will never be wheelie prone stump pullers, it can be controlled on the throttle far better than before with some pretty shite weather making it feel far more controllable, especially picking it up on the throttle ...
After 3.5-4k it flies off like before and give you tons of top gear overtaking performance that you should expect from an 1100 twin...
I even did the fun test of pulling from 1k and up in 5th gear to see what gives and it was problem free... Obviously, its mainly 2-2.5k that it smooth's out but it gives an indication of the improved fuelling...
Overall impressions are excellent, especially when you consider John's chips are easily affordable and easy to fit... Full marks John!
The 11's may seem old hat to many people but when they are running right, they make perfect sense... And the five gears are a really good mix... It's only when you have ridden one that runs as you want that you really appreciate them and I have lived with less than perfect ones before....
And not only that but they are soooo easy to look after...
Will include MPG report after a tank or three...
