JohnGS1100 Tuning Chip

Yes. By free air filter and de-cat system exhaust + stage 5 chip the result is as at the dyno.

Does he need to make sure his CO pot is disconnected though or does the Lambda CCP routing disable it?

PS John, your chip arrived in double quick time and I am fitting it in an hour or so and then riding the bike this week so will report back...:)

I'm not 100% certain but the data I have says that the Coding Plug decides what the Motronic uses. In other words you can have both an O2 sensor and a CO Pot and the Motronic will chose based on the Coding Plug.

Of course it does no harm to unplug the CO Pot if you're not using it. But it might harm the O2 sensor if you unplug it but leave it in the exhaust.

My bike has a lambda and a COpot but no code plug when I bought it.

My bike 'was' exactly the same.. though a German import. manufactured 12/99

came to me with a CAT and COpot and a very sooty exhaust with awful MPG.

I cured this sorry state of affairs by disconnecting the lambda probe from the loom.. then removing the exhaust and replacing it with a new/unused UK original exhaust. an eBay bargain (£25 delivered) had the COpot set up at a local garage.. and have never looked back. this was 9 years ago.. I get 200+ miles from the tank

This is a stock dyno from R1100GS 1997 (no lambda) with Co-pot - full stock settings.. :

And this is the stock settings of CO-POT. Note that working with CCP little brown (pins 30, 87a) :

Fit Out the Co-pot from the bike :

Adjust by screwdriver until the voltmeter tool show these settings :

1 & 3 - 1.03K ohms
1 & 2 - 203.7 ohms
2 & £ - 834 ohms.

I recommend an easy way to adjust the co-pot on bike (without Voltometer) :

WORKING AT ALL R1100GS
(if have Co-Pot). The CCP must be (30, 87a - little brown).
(If the R1100GS has lambda and co-pot, you can fit the correct CCP (30,87a) and now working by ignoring lambda, by CO-POT).

Start engine and (open the throttle position by choke it is very easy) at 3.500 rpm. By holding these rpm, adjust the Co-Pot (by screwdriver) left or righ very easy until the rpms goes up to 3.550-3.600. That's it. The engine before by same throttle position was on 3.500 rpm, now is on 3.600 rpm.

Better burn, better torque better consumption.

I rode London>Sussex>London this weekend (140 miles) and have five bars left on my petrol gauge. I have done some rough sums and the mpg looks to be improved. I'll await till I finish tank on my city commutes to report back. Thanks for the advice

After reading the entire thread ( and only understanding about 10 % of it :D ) and a couple of questions on John's Facebookpage I just ordered one for the stock 1997 R1100 GS with 120.000 km I bought 2 1/2 weeks ago.

John was very helpful in helping me understand what I had and what I needed.

Looking at my CCP I saw I had a red one plugged in and another lightbrown ( beige ) one lying in the empty spot next to the fusebox. Appears that's the one I need so I just have to pull the red one out and plug in the beige one after changing the tuning chip.
After that I have to adjust the CO pot according to the post above.

So I go and sit next to the mailbox now :D

Two days in report...

Bike... R1100GS standard exhaust, K&N (previous owners fit)... CO pot...

Experience... 4th 11GS with approx. 100k miles on oilheads in general... many different bikes ridden as a BM salesman...

I bough the bike a couple of months ago and this has been my smoothest and best running 11 owned so far... Its a 99 and has the twin throttle cables... It was set up a bit "off" when bought and 10 mins on a driveway adjusting cables, setting the tickover and balance by ear later + 10 mins with a multimeter setting the TPS, all was pretty good...

The bike felt pretty good, was still occasionally jumpy at low revs and a little woolly in the 2.5 to 4 k rev range but flew after that... I wanted better slow running, a bit smoother and better response but having had professionally chipped/dynoed and Remused bikes before I fancied a quieter life... The standard can is far better than many people want to believe for all round running...

I bought a stage 4 chip from John, fitted it in 1/2 hour on Sunday, and have ridden it 100 miles + in the last couple of days...

It has made a major difference to the slow running and I have given it a good test running slowly with glitch free operation and it now rides slowly like a carb'ed bike which was always the Motronic 2.2 11's worst scenario...

2 to 4 k is far more responsive and even though 11's will never be wheelie prone stump pullers, it can be controlled on the throttle far better than before with some pretty shite weather making it feel far more controllable, especially picking it up on the throttle ...

After 3.5-4k it flies off like before and give you tons of top gear overtaking performance that you should expect from an 1100 twin...

I even did the fun test of pulling from 1k and up in 5th gear to see what gives and it was problem free... Obviously, its mainly 2-2.5k that it smooth's out but it gives an indication of the improved fuelling...

Overall impressions are excellent, especially when you consider John's chips are easily affordable and easy to fit... Full marks John!

The 11's may seem old hat to many people but when they are running right, they make perfect sense... And the five gears are a really good mix... It's only when you have ridden one that runs as you want that you really appreciate them and I have lived with less than perfect ones before....

And not only that but they are soooo easy to look after... ;)

Will include MPG report after a tank or three...:thumb

How are the 1150 twin spark guys getting on. I am still very interested in doing this to my new adv, but I am concerned about some of the issues brought up on the thread.
Any improvement in mpg?

Hi Mate,

How do I get in touch with John, does he have an email do you know? I have found one advert on Ebay for Eprom tuning chip for 48.99 is this him? The changes to your bike sound superb. Let me know if you can?

Cheers

For R1150 twin the results are excellent :thumb2 Much better consumption by torque and power, more final speed.

Hi John,

Send me your email, as I would like to buy one of your chips

D

My emal is [email protected] I need to know, Model bike and shipping address. Thanks :)

R1150 twin spark what a difference chip has made a real pleasure to ride and returning 55+ mpg, smooth and consistent power right through rev range many thanks John

I think that the twin spark 1150 has better cosnumption.. By stage 4 & 5 chip the R1150gs single has 50+ mpg, but the twin has up to 55 mpg.
Thanks Jeremy :)

Must order a new chip John. I'm picking up an 1150 Gs on Saturday. Expect a Facebook Message over the next few days.

Has anyone used a stage 4 and stage 5 chip in a stock r1100gs? I have stage 5 in mine and although performance has improved in the ways described in this thread I do wonder if stage 4 would be better suited to my set up. MPG better with stage 4?

What set up are you running and what stage chip?

Spoons, I had the same experience on my 850r. The stage four flys and the stage five is a bit unremarkable

Standard can with cat and standard air filter it is a stage 4 chip also joined pretty sure 30 to 87

I think the fog is beginning to clear somewhat.

Am I right in thinking that your R1150GS twinspark, like mine, did not have a CCP fitted as standard.

Also, in order to get the Maps from John's chip loaded, you have to either fit the yellow CCP or link pins 30 and 87.

The reason I ask is because I cannot understand, and I don't think it has been fully explained why, if the original bike comes without the need for a CCP, then why after fitting John's chip does it need a CCP.

Ian
