Hello,

Going to fit my stage 8 chip this weekend and just wanted to confirm the procedure:

Battery Disconnect
Petrol Tank Off
Ecu out
Replace Chip

Reverse procedure.

Do I need to do anything with the CCP on the bike or not as after reading through 64 pages at 0200 in the morning on nights I am slightly confused?

Hi dcd87,

After its all back together turn ignition on without starting and roll throttle fully 3 times to re-set then start.

mind your pinkies when prising the cover off the ecu. Don't wear your fav nylon underwear as it may create a static build up which could damage the electronics, and make sure you get the chip in the correct way. Lots of people have got this wrong.

And finally, enjoy the riding experience of your new steed. John has put a lot of work into these and doesn't ask much in return, his Karma levels must be up there with the likes of Flo Nightingale :bow

Hi dcd87,

1. You don't have to disconnect the battery as you will disconnect the lead going into ECU anyway and the whole unit will be out for you to replace the chip. As advised take ample time to remove the original and replace with lots of patience. Pins bend easily if you force it even when slightly out
2. Hope you have QD's on the fuel lines, make sure you disconnect them and the rubber hoses first, I yanked my tank off without disconnecting one of the QD's :blast
3. My 2005 R850R did not have a CCP. Made up one as suggested but it made the bike run rough. Removing the CCP thereafter has sorted it out. You may have to try both with and without to see which ones works better.

Enjoy!

Dcd87 if you don't disconnect the battery, once you have installed the chip and re assemble pull out fuse #5 for 10 minutes and then do the throttle reset, ignition on without starting fully roll throttle 3 times then start

Check and double check there is no piggy back chip already installed! easy to remove a chip thinking you've done the deed and then find it won't run and over fuels like crazy. Don't ask!!!!!!

Enjoy your new found performance, torque and smoothness:thumby:

glad you asked this, just received mine this week, all valuable advice as and when I get round to doing mine :beerjug:

This may seem like a stupid question as I've never looked inside an ECU, but I assume it's basically a PCB, and the chips are soldered in, and some de-soldering and re-soldering will be required???

Chips just click in and out. No soldering involved!

I would also allow for an end float and valve check together with a throttle balance at the same time as rechipping. My bike seemed to become more sensitive to these being slightly out than before once the new chip was in.
