In defence of the rear wheel splash guard/protector. While touring in Ireland this summer and stationary at a set of traffic lights, one of the indigenous population decided to ram me from behind in his Rover 400.
The resulting collision pushed me a couple of yards forward and I presumed the impact would have at least caused cosmetic, if not structural damage. On inspecting the bike, the point of contact was the rear protector and offside pannier. Apart from the pannier rail being slightly misaligned, this was the only evidence of the incident.
After slackening and retightening the rail fasteners, the pannier sat correctly and was completely unmarked.
Although the rear protector looks a bit naff, it’s quite substantial and seems to absorb a reasonable impact, as did the pannier.
